Scosche tapSTICK

Posted on 12 July 2009

Some 3rd generation iPod Shuffle users have expressed frustration over the fact that currently the only headphones which can be used with the device are the ones Apple includes in the packaging. Reason being the Shuffle no longer has any sort of buttons to control playback volume etc.   It’s all done through a small controller which is built into the headphones. Dan recently discussed the issue in this post. Scosche seems poised to relieve sufferers of this problem everywhere with some nice solutions. I recently wrote about their tapLine control adapter and they’ve now announced the tapStick. This device acts as a case for the Shuffle… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

BlackBerry Tour launches on Verizon today

Posted on 12 July 2009

Yawn. Another day. Another variation of the BlackBerry form factor. This one lacks Wi-Fi but it does have a 3.2 MP camera and a slightly different keyboard than all the rest. The BlackBerry Tour is available online for the 2 year contract price of $199 (no rebate) or if you’re against contracts Verizon will enroll you for a month to month contract after you buy the phone for $489. If you’re a Verizon customer using an older BlackBerry then this is a pretty sweet upgrade. For everyone else, based on specifications and form factor, it’s just another incremental BlackBerry upgrade. Watch for this one to hit the “free” category within 4 months. Happy Birthday Woot.com

Posted on 12 July 2009

One deal per day and only one deal.  That’s the woot.com business model.  Well, it’s hard to believe, but woot is now 5 years old today!  They have a special deal for you if you’re lucky.  Today’s woot are the famous woot-off lights.  They are USB powered and generally useless except for having fun with your co workers.  Except since today is woot’s birthday, you have a 1/10 chance of winning a bag of crap.  Sometimes your crap can be really good.  Other times, it’s, well, crap.  Everyone tries to buy the crap because you never know when you will get a insanely good deal. Goozex celebrates 3 years of user-based game trading!

Posted on 11 July 2009

In this down economy, video gamers are looking to get a better value for their money just like everyone else. Given that most will play through a game once and then seldom if ever return, justifying a $60 purchase for perhaps 8 hours of use is difficult. Retailer GameStop has offered store credit for trade-ins for several years, but most gamers find the value poor (for example, you would buy a game for $60 one week, and trade it for $25 the next, and see it on the shelf for $55 the next day). There are other options such as eBay and the rather convoluted site GameTZ, but three years ago today a new site emerged seeking a simpler… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Apps On Sale – Byline

Posted on 10 July 2009

I keep bouncing between a number of different RSS readers on my iPhone. Each has its pros and cons and I still haven’t made a full commitment to one. For anyone who uses NewsGator the app NetNewsWire is a great choice (and the only choice). If you don’t need full sync with Google Reader and can live with just your favorites and starred items being exchanged iNews is FANTASTIC. (It has, by far, the best interface in my opinion.) If you MUST use have an app that fully syncs with Google Reader you won’t find a better choice than Byline.  And you won’t find a better day to buy it than today…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Gear Deal: Pre-order Red Faction Guerrilla (PC), get mega-bonus!

Posted on 10 July 2009

While XBOX360 and PS3 owners are already enjoying the critically acclaimed Red Faction Guerrilla, the PC version was delayed until late summer. The release date isn’t official, but there seems to be a broad consensus that the date is August 25th. Given that the franchise started out on the PC, some feel a bit put out over the delay. Or perhaps you have heard of the franchise only recently and never played the originals, and are still disappointed at having to wait while your console gamer friends are already on their second playthrough.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Rethinking The 3rd Generation iPod Shuffle

Posted on 10 July 2009

I would like to think that I am quick to admit when I am wrong (a common occurrence in my world) and this is one of those times. A few months ago I was a bit harsh on the 3rd Generation iPod Shuffle. I believe I referred to it in this way… I think we have a one generation device here. Unless Apple or a third party provider develops an accessory that has buttons and a non-proprietary connector into which the current shuffle can slip. That would provide the flexibility of a 4GB device that HAS tactile controls or a tiny one without. Short of that… anyone interested in an upcoming collector’s item?! Well, I admit it… I was wrong… dead wrong. Let me explain why. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

The Flipside of Fashion is Security – This Wallet is a Vault in a Pocket

Posted on 10 July 2009

Tin foil is sooo passé. If you’re stylish and paranoid, the Flipside wallet is the fashion accessory for you. This polymer and aluminum wallet comes in three striking colors, holds 6 cards or 15 cash bills, and springs open automatically at the press of a button. Credit cards these days come with embedded radio (RFID) chips, and the Flipside’s shielded interior prevents identity thieves from skimming your cards. The stylish geek knows that fashion is fleeting, and when it’s time for a new wallet, the Flipside is completely recyclable. Best of all, it’s made entirely in the US of A. $40 each from Flipside Wallets Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Ericsson will run Sprint’s network; Big Changes Afoot? Or Not

Posted on 10 July 2009

photo credit: The Consumerist Yesterday, Sprint announced that they would be entering into a seven year, 4.5 to 5 billion dollar agreement with Ericsson. This sounds like it will basically take all of the network management pressure off of Sprint, allowing them to focus on their customer service and product offerings. Some of the major points, as outlined in their joint press releases,  include: * Sprint retains full ownership and control of its network assets, and solely owns network strategy and investment decisions. * Customers will continue to work directly with Sprint employees as their primary contact, as Sprint retains full control of the customer experience, customer technical support and services review. * Sprint retains technology and vendor selections. * Ericsson assumes responsibility for the day-to-day services, provisioning and maintenance for the Sprint-owned CDMA, iDEN and wireline networks. * Ericsson will optimize Sprint’s multi-vendor inventory of assets such as spare parts and transmission equipment, and provide processes and tools for managing the national network platforms and operational support systems. * The transferred employees ["The transaction calls for about 6,000 Sprint employees to begin performing their network functions as Ericsson employees sometime in the 3rd quarter. "] will become part of [...]
