GDGT Launches

Posted on 02 July 2009

The long awaited web venture from Ryan Block and Peter Rojas has just launched. Their joint site GDGT.COM, which is separate from their popular podcast of the same name, appears to be designed as a community for gadget lovers. I need to spend some time browsing the site, however at first look it seems headed toward being a site to get trusted feedback on gadgets and eventually make purchases. Because both Ryan and Peter have extensive blog experience (they are both former editors for Engadget/Gizmodo and Peter founded Engadget) they likely have a lot of new ideas in the hopper. It’s still early so they may have added plans in store for the site beyond the initial features… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Do you have an IBM ThinkPad that has a red pointer that’s a bit worn out or dirty? I’d recommend buying this deal simply because the shipping and handling has to cost more than the .39 the company is charging to send out one red IBM ThinkPad Trackpoint Red Cap Pointer replacement pad. As a matter of fact you can drive the price down even further and snag 4 for .99. Especially good deal for those who don’t wash their hands often and in return have filthy pointer pads. Posted on 01 July 2009

David Blaine brings his  to the iPhone with Streeet Magic: See-A-Card.  Looking at the video above you’d think that he developed the app all on his own as well, but that is merely an illuuuuuuuuuusion. You can thank Partners 1993 for bringing Blaine to the iPhone via MindBoggling, LLC (Blaine’s “software firm”).  Now you too can amaze any and everyone with card trickery right from your iPhone — because nothing impresses folks like the skill of showing off a card trick on a phone.  Download the application now and watch $1.99 vanish from your bank account. Appliya Studio Makes Anyone an iPhone Application Developer — for a Hefty Price

Posted on 01 July 2009

Japanese mobile application publisher Appliya, Inc has just launched their own rapid application development service with Appliya Studio.   Don’t know how to program?  Don’t want to pay for a contract programmer to write and design your iPhone application?  For a mere $524 (excluding any applicable excise tax), you can use Appliya Studio to create an application.  Then sell the app for a sweet return —  minus the 30% that Appliya will take out, in addition to the 30% Apple takes as a commission).  But wait, there’s more…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Apple’s far reaching grip

Posted on 01 July 2009

Greetings from the warm and sunny beaches of the Outer Banks. Since I’m on vacation, and if my wife catches me crafting this post she might not speak to me the rest of our time here, I’ll keep this brief. While shopping today at Kitty Hawk Sports I came across this t-shirt (OBX has long been the abbreviation for the Outer Banks) and couldn’t help but chuckle.  I also couldn’t help but purchase one.  ;)  But hey, I fully admit to being an Apple Fan Boy. Just further proof that Apple’s brand image sometime stretches further than some of us realize. If you have to have one too and don’t plan on… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

GearDeal: HTC Dash S620 – Unlocked – $99

Posted on 01 July 2009

Do you have kids that are text messaging addicts? Everywhere I go I see people text messaging like crazy – and kids seem to be the leading users of text messaging. The problem with buying phones for kids is they lose them or leave them in the rain. That’s why I’m a big fan of prepaid phones – however the selection of phones with QWERTY keyboards for prepaid plans can be skimpy. Here’s a great opportunity to pick up a full QWERTY smartphone with Quad Band capabilities (850/900/1800/1900). The Windows Mobile powered device is unlocked so it takes any GSM SIM you throw at it. On the downside, the camera is way mediocre (only 1.3 megapixels) and this is an EDGE… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

iPhone OS 3.1 To Bring More Than Just Bug Fixes

Posted on 01 July 2009

We all knew an update to iPhone OS 3.0 would be on the way some time in the near future, but this is not only fast but significant too. If you recall, last summers’ release of iPhone OS 2.0 was a bit problematic. An update was released within a few weeks but it simply made the new operating system not suck stink. Feature enhancements were made to that generation of the OS but those came later. Well, OS 3.1 is on the way, and while it is filled with the requisite bug fixes it actually adds some significant enhancements to Video and Voice Control as well.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Lessons Learned: Getting Help at the Apple Store

Posted on 01 July 2009

A few weeks back, I wrote about a poor experience I had trying to get help for my broken iPhone 3G (the mute toggle switch broke). The staff was seriously hung up on their process to the point that they wouldn’t even let me show them where the process was broken. This past weekend, I tried again, but with a different Apple store. This time I went to the Partridge Creek store in the Detroit suburbs. The experience was totally different.
