What if you could turn someone into anyone you wanted; give them a new personality, new memories, a new life…and then with the flick of a switch, take it away and leave them blank until you add a new one?
Sound intriguing? That’s the basic conceit of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. Season 1 is now on sale at Amazon.com for 29.99; the list price is 49.99.
If you haven’t caught this show, or you saw the first few episodes and couldn’t get into it, give it another shot. The last 8 episodes improved immensely, and the DVD has both the unaired original pilot and an unaired 13th episode that sets up the mythology for the rest of the series. The season started out slow, but it has all the elements for great sci fi: moral dilemmas, technology being used in new and frightening ways, and of course several alums of great science fiction shows like Battlestar Galactica and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Dollhouse was renewed for a second season, so now’s your chance to catch up and be set for the premier this fall on Fox. And yes, I’m shamelessly promoting this because I am one of the 4 people who actually watched it from start to finish during the season!

I tried, I really tried … but found myself surprised that it got renewed, which I attribute to a combination of Joss Whedon’s popularity and probably the lack of anything better to put in its’ place.

Hmm…them’s fightin’ words.
Seriously, I totally understand. I didn’t get into the show until Ep 6, “Man on the Street”, and even though I was somewhat disappointed with “Omega” I bought the dvds out of curiousity for “Epitaph One”, and because the series had enough high points that I wanted them in case it got axed at the end of S1.
Epitaph One, in my opinion, should have aired with the series. It answers the questions “What is the true purpose of the Dollhouse/What is Rossum’s endgame” and it shows you some of the aftermath. I never trust Joss Whedon, so I don’t know if he really wants it to be canon or if he’s going to claim it is “one possible outcome” but it was some of the best acting from the main cast, better writing than they showed earlier in the season, and a very intriguing storyline.
Netflix it if nothing else, and see if that doesn’t slightly pique your interest in S2.
