GearGames Weekly: August 2 – 8

Posted on 02 August 2009 by

Welcome back to the GearGames weekly video game release feature here at Gear Diary! After last week’s blockbuster release of Wii Sports Resort, this week is a bit of a let-down. Another Fallout 3 DLC, another movie tie-in, some budget priced ‘shovelware’, and the game set I’m featuring, the Hannah Montana PSP Pack. Why is that featured? Read on and see!

I chose Hannah Montana PSP as it represents another ‘fine moment in Sony marketing’. Last week I reported that the Sony PSP sales were down from 3.7 million to 1.3 million – that is a 65% year-to-year drop. This is definitely influenced in part by the upcoming launch of the PSP Go … as well as the continued dearth of anything worth playing on the platform. So what happens? A new PSP-3000 based release?!? That will sell a few thousand units, I’m sure … but I think SOny needs more than a purple case to spark life in the PSP platform. How about … some games? Anyway, check out the list!

Some notes from last week:

  • Wii Sports Resort (Wii)
  • - You know the story – it is gimmicky, the games are thin and small, graphics are basic, and so on. Yet once again Nintendo has scored an amazing victory that shows yet again that gameplay is more important than graphics or being trendy or ‘kewl’.

  • Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 1: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal (Wii)
  • - Still the great game released for the PC, but the performance is not up to par. Still pretty decent, but play on PC if you have the choice.

  • The King of Fighters XII (X360, PS3)
  • - Not Prince, not Duke, not Earl. Not quite Court Jester, but definitely NOT king.

  • Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (X360, PS3)
  • - Solid fighting game – much better than King of Fighters, and much cheaper.

  • Bionic Commando (PC)
  • - Better off sticking with the original game on one of those ‘arcade collections’ (the PSP ones are a fave of mine).

  • East India Company
  • - Another solid adventure-simulation game, but you are MUCH better off with Dawn of Discovery.

What games am I playing now?:

  • PC: Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines – I’m nearing the end game with mixed feelings – I have loved the experience once again, but hate to see it end!
  • PC: Two Worlds – replaying a game I gave 3/5 stars in a review elsewhere a while ago. Debate broke out in a forum and I had to check it out again. The action is fun, but the dialogue is awful.
  • PSP: Dissidia: Final Fantasy (demo) – not much content, but loads of fun in this upcoming fighting game.

So what are you playing? Chime in below!

Enjoy gaming!

Mobile Technology has played a major role in my life - I have used an electronic companion since the HP95LX more than 20 years ago, and have been a 'Laptop First' person since my Compaq LTE Lite 3/20 and Powerbook 170 back in 1991! As an avid gamer and gadget-junkie I was constantly asked for my opinions on new technology, which led to writing small blurbs ... and eventually becoming a reviewer many years ago. My family is my biggest priority in life, and they alternate between loving and tolerating my gaming and gadget hobbies ... but ultimately benefits from the addition of technology to our lives!
