Google Voice + iPhone, but no native app? Call frequent contacts with less clicks

So, you have a Google Voice account and an iPhone, but don’t have any of the native applications (GV Mobile, VoiceCentral) because Apple pulled them from the App Store before you downloaded them? While there are other options out there, such as running GV Mobile on a jailbroken iPhone, there is another option that may work if you have a few contacts that you want to frequently call via Google Voice.

Google offers native mobile applications for BlackBerry and Android devices. For everyone else, they have a mobile site that allows for access to contacts. From one page you can quickly call or SMS any of your contacts. However If you have a long list of contacts and want quick access, it is not easy to navigate.

You could use the search box, but if you want one-touch access, there is a quicker way.

Go to the Google Voice Mobile site. Click on the Contacts link and find a contact by browsing or typing their name in the search box.

Each contact has a unique URL. Click on the plus icon in Mobile Safari and choose Add to Home Screen.

Choose a name for the shortcut and click Add to save the contact.

Now you have a shortcut on the home screen. When you select that, you will go directly to that contact in the Google Voice mobile website.

When you are viewing the contact in Mobile Safari, you will see all contact numbers. If you click the linked phone number, it will call the contact with your actual iPhone directly. However, if you click on the Call or SMS buttons, it will call the person via your Google Voice number.

While this isn’t anywhere as easy as the native apps, it is simpler than navigating through several pages of contacts in the mobile version of the Google Voice site. Anyone that you have a recent phone call or text message from appears on the main Google Voice mobile page, and you can click on their name to get to the contact quickly as well.

Dan Cohen recommends using MyWebClip to manage your webclips on the iPhone. This application consolidates your webclips and allows you to create direct one touch links for emailing or calling (regular phone) contacts.

The key benefit to MyWebClip is it keeps all your webclip icons on one screen where you can easily select them and reduce clutter. In testing the application also seems to speed up web browsing by a factor of about 2x.

Lastly, Gina Trapani explains in her article How to SMS with Google Voice from Any Mobile Phone another method, and her tip works on any phone for both SMS and phone calls (see first comment from Brett Kelly).
