dsi-facebook

Back in June at the E3 gaming convention, Nintendo indicated that they would be adding the ability for users to integrate their DSi handhelds with Facebook. They indicated that this would include and pretty much be limited to uploading pictures from the dual cameras on the device. Since then there was no firm date given for the integration, but since the functionality was made available in Japan last week, ithere was an assumption that it would arrive in North America fairly soon. Now we have a date – August 3rd at 5PM PST.

According to an article at Gamasutra,

Facebook on DSi will take advantage of the handheld’s cameras and storage space, as users will be able to transfer pictures from DSi to their Facebook profile, among other functions.

“Facebook and Nintendo DSi build on the trend of personalization that is so important to consumers,” said Nintendo of America EVP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway. “We’re giving people the tools to express themselves in creative new ways and show off the results to their friends and family on Facebook.”

Nintendo cited figures from research firm NPD Group, which said the DSi, launched in the US in April, has sold 1.7 million units in the country to date.

Facebook is becoming increasingly prolific in the games space, as game companies are sprouting up to make titles for the “social games” space. Mass-market titles like Zynga’s Mafia Wars and Texas HoldEm Poker, and PlayFish’s Pet Society are popular Facebook games. Microsoft also promised upcoming Facebook integration with the Xbox Live network.

The download is free, and I will be certain to give this dubious update a try – Facebook users be on the lookout for an influx of poorly lit low resolution images with cheesy effects applied!
