Moving Toward Divorce… At Least Apple And Google Are Still (up)dating

We’re working on the next installment of our weekly app update series (and there have been a ton of good ones) but this one stands out on its own…

A good bit of drama has been playing out between Apple and Google and it isn’t slowing down. Most recently  9to5Mac posted that, for years, there had been a non-employee poaching gentleman’s agreement between the two. With the resignation of Google’s Schmidt form the Apple board, off. Let the poaching begin!

That’s why it was a bit surprising to see THIS update appear tonight. It isn’t a huge update to the excellent free Google Mobile App and, unsurprisingly, while it includes Gmail, GCal, GDocs, GTalk, GTasks, GReader and more there is one Google product noticeably missing… now what could it be…  :)

Kids… can’t we all just get along?

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. +Dan Cohen

It seems to me that Google is “moving in” on both Apple’s and MS’s territories, and they’re both fighting back. MS has an alliance with Yahoo now, Apple is “divorcing” as you say. What’s next, I wonder? Yahoo already has web email, and AT&T has oursourced their traditional POP3/SMTP service to Yahoo. Will we see YDocs, etc, “powered by Microsoft”?

It will be interesting to see where things are in 6 months, and how Google reacts. I must admit, I’ve never cared for Google. I can’t put my finger on it, but for some reason I’ve always preferred Yahoo. Maybe it’s that stark, almost barren Google home page compared to Yahoo’s.
