A judge on Tuesday ordered Microsoft to stop all sales of Microsoft Word within 60 days. This order stems from a complaint from a company called i4i which hit the mother load filed a complaint that Microsoft infringed on certain patents related to the creation of XML documents. Analysts think an appeal is likely and that there’s little likelihood that Word will be pulled from the market. Available options could likely include paying i4i a big bag of money, devising a workaround or stripping XML functionality.

Love it! (BTW it’s mother lode, rather than mother load)

I read the article on this at ComputerWorld. I have a problem with companies that patent an idea and then use it as a business plan to sue the world and collect. Not sure if this is REALLY what happened here, but I always go there to start.

I also agree that this is likely not going to halt sales of Word in the US. I see an appeal coming…
