The G1 may not get any more desserts.

The story that is almost everywhere is that the G1 may be at the end of the line for updates.  This comes from one tweet from a android engineer.  Now I personally think that this is being blown completely out of proportion.  Could it be true?  Sure, it’s very possible that this is true, but the real story isn’t out yet and nothing has been officially announced from Google or T-Mobile.  However, I find it hard to believe that this ONE engineer can speak for the entire Android team.  Plus as a member of the open source community, I caution people to never underestimate a community that is dedicated to the advancement of open source software.

This also happened to the first Maemo device, the N770.  Initially, OS 2007 and OS 2008 were not going to be supported.  However, thanks to the community, the Hacker Editions were released for each version.

The G1 won’t go on forever though.  Thankfully, I don’t have too much longer on my contract and I will be able to upgrade to a new Android device.  Do I tell people to not buy a G1?  No.  At least until the Sholes or the Morrison come out, the G1 is the only Android phone on the block with a decent built-in physical keyboard.  That isn’t a bad thing!
