Apple fan-boys and girls may be seeing an expensive few months ahead if the rumors are right.

Let’s recap…

Rumors of an Apple tablet have floated around for years. Lately the drumbeat got louder and louder and louder. People claimed to have see the device. Reports that other companies have slowed or stopped development on next gen devices until they see what Apple brings out spread. (Now there’s an awesome way to ensure you always stay one or more steps behind.)It has been looking more and more likely that a tablet was on the way. Yeah!

And there has been tremendous consensus on many aspects of the upcoming device. Save one that is… Many have said the tablet is coming in September while others guarantee that we won’t see it until 2010.

Well, the latest rumor, if true, explains why…

Seems word now is that we’ll be seeing two tablets in the upcoming months. One, a larger iPod touch running OS X iPhone and the other a larger device running a “full” OS. The large touch is, as Richard Doherty, a director at market researcher Envisioneering Group put it, “…something that you know, but bigger.” Out of the gate it will run tens of thousands of apps. It will be great for browsing, awesome for gaming and it will be a killer eBook reader. (And If Zinio gets in the game the magazine world is going to get a huge boost. When (not if) it happens remember who called it!) :)

The larger device will run full Mac applications and offer more power.

So now lets see how this plays out…
The argument is between a September and an early 2010 release. Moreover, the 2010ers say there will be no tablet at the September event. period! fini!
Maybe they are right. Maybe there won’t be a tablet in September but rather an iPhone touch on steroids. Then some time in 2010 Apple lets loose a larger, more expensive device running full Mac applications. By then people have gotten even more used to tablets finally coming into their own and, after so many failed attempts to get tablets into the mainstream Apple makes it happen.

No one knows for sure but it sure is looking like the next months will be interesting… and expensive. Damn you Apple!

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. +Dan Cohen

If Apple builds larger iPod Touch – I’m guessing it will have bigger display and bigger resolution.
I have no idea how iPhone applications are built, so my question is – will applications be able to scale to bigger resolution? Because my impression is that both the OS and applications are “fixed” to HVGA resolution of the device. If that’s the case then running all these thousands of applications will not be really enjoyable experience…
