Microsoft’s new strategy: Windows Mobile 6.5 to compete with Android, and Windows Mobile 7 – with the iPhone

According to DigiTimes, Microsoft plans to use the strategy of the two platforms to compete with Android and iPhone OS. It’s about promoting Windows Mobile operating system and enhancing its friendliness to the “finger” management.

The official launch of the new version of Windows Mobile 6.5 is scheduled for October 1 this year, and in February 2010, an upgrade version with the touch interface will be added, says DigiTimes. Windows Mobile 7, in turn, will be released in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Microsoft will not phase out Windows Mobile 6.5 from the market but will lower the OS price, when it launches Windows Mobile 7 scheduled in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Thus, the cheaper and popular Windows Mobile 6.5 is designed to compete with Android, and the more advanced Windows Mobile 7 will be a platform to compete with the iPhone.

Shall we see how this plays out?

At least now we know what all this new 6.5 builds with “touch” features (picture above) mean, they are parts of new “6.5 Touch” release scheduled for February.

To me, it still looks like buying time for more and more late WM7, but we’ll see…

That’s not WM 7 it’s one of the newest test builds of 6.5.
And it obviously includes some of the touch elements, that apparently will go into the February “Touch” build.
