You have to load the firmware among other things. This one is targeted at Netbooks. Those usually have intel cards (mine does). SO yeah it's a problem. The problem is the binary blob that must be loaded. This blob is closed code and is not typically distributed with the kernel. In fact, Ubuntu kernel developers won't even mess with that.
