Remember, “Where In The World is Carmen San Diego?” Well there is a new game coming to an iPhone near you — it’s called “Where In The World Is Judie Sandiego?“. In order to play you need an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and the application “Hey Where Are You?”

Then you need a weekend when Judie and Kevin are on the way home from an out-of-town wedding. (No, don’t get all excited, they didn’t get hitched — not yet anyhow… but Judie’s daughter  did! (Congratulations  Judie!)

Once you’ve got the requirements lined up- the iPhone, the app and the travelers- this is how you play…

Since Judie just got an iPhone 3GS (welcome back in the fold!) you ask her to download the free app “Hey Where Are You?” (aka HeyWAY).

You send her a request to see her location. Once she accepts you send a request to see where she is right now and… boom…

…a map with her current location pops up.

What is really neat is that after a few updates you can flip through them all one at a time and see the progress she has made.

In this way when a friend is on a trip you can follow their progress and, after a few updates began to scroll from one update to the next so that you actually experience the trip with them. Is there a lot of practicality to the app beyond being able to follow your kid for example? Not really but it is a lot of fun.

And the answer to the question “Where In The World Is Judie Sandiego?” is… as you can plainly see from this map…

In the middle of freaking nowhere!

(Now before you start  bombarding Judie with requests, you should know that I have since suggested that she remove the app from her phone lest she have 5000 of you requesting to follow her every move.  It is off her phone so don’t even bother to ask.)

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. +Dan Cohen
