I didn’t really understand what all the fuss over “augmented reality apps” was. There has been some serious buzz lately but I just didn’t get why overlaying information when uing the iPhone’s GPS was such a huge deal.

Then it was revealed that the update to the app Yelp had a little tiny Easter Egg that is HUGE!!!!

Shake the iPhone 3 times (HARD!) and the added functionality is unlocked. After that, if you tap the “Monocle” icon in the ipper left the iPhone’s camera turns on and shows you what the lens can see. BUT the GPS also activates and shows you what it “sees”. That means, it locates you and identifies business near you. It then SHOWS them on the screen. If you tap them the content fills the screen. It gives you the address, the phone number and reviews. Tap the number and call the business. Tap the address and map your way to it.

Seriously you have to see it to believe it…. so here… take a look. (apologies for the poor quality)

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. +Dan Cohen
