It looks so much better than Symbian (which has been really showing its "drunk monkey" roots lately.)

It is awfully shiny and new…I just hope Nokia’s got a whole line around Maemo planned out. PLUS....since this phone runs Linux, I bet that you can probably make a regular cell call on it as well.
I really want this to be in the US! BAD!

VoIP is going to take over….whether the carries want it to or not!

PLUS….since this phone runs Linux, I bet that you can probably make a regular cell call on it as well.

I really want this to be in the US! Which is kind of misleading if they're advertising it with a phone.
I agree that VOIP is the way of the future, but if the carriers who are subsidizing this have the ability to roadblock it then it makes me wonder what niche it fits in.
Or Nokia's PR people are wildly misinformed.
Something is definitely up!

Ok, now I’m totally confused…there was a big debate on Brighthand’s forums about whether it was a phone, and Ed Hardy said that Nokia’s PR people are saying it CAN use VOIP but that’s dependent on the carrier.

Which is kind of misleading if they’re advertising it with a phone.

I agree that VOIP is the way of the future, but if the carriers who are subsidizing this have the ability to roadblock it then it makes me wonder what niche it fits in.

Or Nokia’s PR people are wildly misinformed.

Something is definitely up!

By: Joel McLaughlin

<guid

If it isn't a phone, then what is this?
http://maemo.nokia.com/features/phone/
Also, if it has VoIP it IS a phone....it's just not using GSM or CDMA voice networks.
Personally, VoIP is GOING to be the way calls will be made most of the time very soon. It's flexible in that I can take the call anywhere in the world and not need a cell network. I canbe using Roadrunner at home one minute and the next using the wifi at the coffee shoppe and in between using 3G. With a phone like the N900, I can do anything a regular cell phone can but not be dependent on using a specific network.
In the future, GSM and CDMA phone networks will just morph to treat everything the same....as DATA. That includes your voice calls using VoIP.

Joel Mclaughlin<br

Bah...this got a lot less interesting. Sad.
