Larry is out fighting fires right now (he just sent an image from his current “job”- those guys and gals deserve major props!) but he pinged me that QIK is now live in the App Store… for free. With QIK you can stream live video from your iPhone (Windows Mobile, Symbian [S60] and Android phones, too!), and share them with the world as events happen. Here are a few quick QIK examples… (Hint… looks better coming from the iPhone!) Grab it here… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Infiniti M reveal may be onto something

Posted on 13 August 2009

The event takes place at the prestigious 2009 Concours dí Elegance event in Pebble Beach where Infiniti will become the first company to launch a car via a full-size virtual model. The sedan won’t actually be there as Infiniti will become the first automaker to use virtual technology mapping to project the car on a full-size clay model of Infiniti’s flagship sedan to simulate the effect. In-person attendees will feel like the car is actually in the room. “On August 14 at 6:30 PM PDT, be one of the first to see the unveiling of the all-new 2011 Infiniti M through a cutting edge technology that creates a “virtual M” on a 3D form. InfinitiUSA.com will host the exclusive live broadcast from the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, one of the world’s premier automotive events, as Infiniti Design Director Shiro Nakamura unveils our newest expression of sculpted form and rejuvenating refinement.” Link to live webcast: http://www.infinitiusa.com/about/future-vehicles.html. So after reading this, and wondering if it wouldn’t just be easier to have the actual car at the unveiling, I started to think …… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

An Unboxing I NEVER Thought I Would Do

Posted on 13 August 2009

For me, the iPhone was love at first multi-touch. When I bought one exactly two years ago this week, I thought that I would NEVER want to try another device. EVER. Since then I’ve had an iPhone “Classic”, a 3G and now a 3GS. The iPhone 3GS is amazing. It is fast, it has huge storage and… it’s an iPhone! BUT… Apple’s shenanigans lately got me thinking. I’ve started wondering about the longevity of the platform a bit and, more importantly, as someone who uses a tremendous number of Google products including Gmail and Google Voice, I’ve started wondering if these services will continue to be crippled on the iPhone. So… I started looking around. The result… except for a few iPhone app reviews I have pending, my iPhone will be in a drawer for the time being. In its place…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Paranoid Much???

Posted on 13 August 2009

We got word on a nifty new ultra-thin Wireless LCD Video Monitor from Brickhouse Security. The Wi-Spi EX30 is just 2.75″ and can stream footage from 30 feet away. It looks interesting and at $169 is priced quite well. I started writing the post on it to share the specs etc but… well it is a rainy, dreary day here in New Jersey. So I figured I might as well share the details a bit differently… For more information visit Brickhouse Security’s website. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Office 2010 for Mac will Include Outlook for Mac

Posted on 13 August 2009

Two words – THANK GOODNESS! I have been saying for years how horrible Entourage is.  Its awkward, clunky, bloated, and so NOT compatible with Outlook for Windows. However, that layer of pain for those of us needing/wanting some kind of (more) Outlook-for-Windows-like app for Mac will soon be at an end…hopefully. I just saw on Apple Insider that Microsoft Office 2010 for Mac, scheduled to be available by the 2010 Holidays will include a newly built from the ground up version of Outlook. Eric Wilfrid, general manager of MacBU, Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit, announced the new application during a conference call Thursday morning. Outlook will rely on a new database Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Speck Update’s SeeThru Hard Shell For 13″ MacBook Pro

Posted on 13 August 2009

One of my favorite MacBook accessories is the Speck SeeThru Hard Shell case. The high quality plastic shell looks good, fits perfectly and, most importantly, offers amazing protection! At $49.95 it is a bit expensive but considering the superb protection it offers it is well worth the price. Speck recently updated the case to better fit the new 13″ MacBook Pro. Here’s a quick look at what changed… The Speck SeeThru Hard Shell has an MSRP of $49.95 and is available HERE Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Comparing MacBooks – Mine is Better than Yours

Posted on 13 August 2009

I’ve had a Mac laptop since 2006.  I love my notebook and carry it just about everywhere I go.  That’s part of my problem. The contents of my Gear Bag My Gear Bag holds just about everything that I might need in my portable office.  I have my 13” Unibody MacBook, my MSI Wind, a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate Windows Vista Business, Office 2007 Ultimate, various other CD’s, miscellaneous paperwork, a 320GB USB hard drive and charging bricks and cables for all of the above. The bag weighs near 40 pounds. This weight is the major reason why, when I considered a new computer purchase, I decided on the 13” unibody MacBook. The 13” MB is a full pound lighter than its 15″ counterpart. That is a big difference in day-to-day use. I got mine and love it. But I’m not the only MacBook owner in the family. Nope. there are currently three of us. And each of our notebooks are just the slightest bit different. I spent some time with all three and it gave me a rather unique perspective on Apple’s current notebook offerings. … Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Google Reader offers more sharing options

Posted on 13 August 2009

Google Reader has been updated to add some sharing features. Previously I had setup a Friendfeed page to pull in my shared Google Reader items. In turn Friendfeed sent links to Twitter and Facebook to annoy my friends with RSS feed items I’d shared. Now instead of having to share Google Reader items with a third party site such as Friendfeed you send items directly to Blogger, Delicious, Digg, Facebook, MySpace, Reddit, StumbleUpon and Twitter. You can also now search more easily for Google Reader users who share items publicly as well as mark all your RSS feeds as read. Google Reader Blog Continue reading on Gear Diary …

A brand-new 37-inch Sony flat screen television for $100? Great deal — until you realize you just bought an oven door.

Posted on 13 August 2009

Police in San Leandro California caught a would be scammer red handed as he tried to sell an oven door cleverly disguised as a 37-inch Sony flat screen television. The guy took a door off his oven, slapped a bunch of TV stickers and a Best Buy price label on the front, packed in some electric cables and an installation guide and inserted the everything into a real Sony TV box. He then proceeded to the Wal-Mart parking lot where he attempted to sell the “television” to unsuspecting customers for $100 claiming that he had bought it for $60 at a tag sale. Can you imagine what this guy might be able to accomplish if he put that effort into a… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Zune HD demonstrated on video

Posted on 12 August 2009

PC Magazine has a nice demonstration of the yet to be released Microsoft Zune HD. According to leaked pricing information from Amazon expect a 16 GB version for $219 and 32 GB for $289.99. The player supports both HD video and HD radio broadcasts. It contains a 480-by-272-pixel OLED screen and works very similar to the iPod Touch – including the by-now-standard pinch zoom method of zooming in or out of the web browser screen. If advance rumors are correct, expect to see this debut in the fall. PC Magazine Continue reading on Gear Diary …
