If there’s one thing the iPhone is missing, that it needs to forever insure its place as a top notch gaming console, it’s high quality sports games. Sure there a sports apps in the App Store, but none on the same quality level of the other popular handheld gaming devices. We’ve been patiently waiting for EA Sports to release their version of Madden 2010. However, Gameloft has beaten them to the punch with today’s release of NFL 2010. The game is officially licensed by the NFL and contains all the NFL teams. 3D graphics and a playbook with 200+ plays bill it as a worthy of the best handheld simulators… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Something tells me we’ll see more and more of this… developers creating an application, releasing it, and then some time later, trying to sell the app itself. That’s the case with the app “Top-Tens”. Its developer is headed for a six month sabbatical and thought it better to sell the app than let it wither away. Top-Tens- gives the user the ability to easily keep tabs on the Top 10s of their favorite hobbies, interests or pastimes – from the top 10 books and movies to the top 10 computer viruses, top 10 email spam and phishing scams, to even the top 10 online deals and coupons, product recalls, or Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Do you struggle with having to remove your iPhone’s case every time you go to use an accessory that has a built in dock? There are many iPhone accessories which allow you to stream audio and video from the phone or simply sync and charge. I myself use two, the iHome iP99 Clock Radio and the Griffin Simplifi. Most of my cases fit in these docks with adapters but some do not, including my favorite case, the OtterBox Defender. The Cable Jive Dock Extender is a cable which allows you to plug your iPhone into the dock accessory of your choice without removing it’s case. The cable comes in two sizes 2 feet ($25.95)… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I’ve happily been using Navigon’s GPS solution on my iPhone 3GS. Sure there are benefits to having a standalone unit but, at least for me, having one integrated solution is the way to go. What can I say, I like being able to avoid having yet another device in my car. When the Navigon app was released I debated whether or not I should jump on the initial discount that currently has the app for $69.99 or wait until TomTom released or, at a minimum, announced pricing of theirs. After all, the TomTom app had been shown as part of a larger system that included a nice windshield mount that enhances the GPS signal. The TomTom pricing was leaked today. I’m glad I jumped on Navigon.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Some apps deserve long, full reviews. Others are best reviewed in video. Others still are neat little gems but don’t take a whole lot to explain. That’s the idea behind… Quick Apps- Quick Looks At Apps That Are Worth A Look Today’s Quick App- CardStar I try to keep as little in my wallet as possible. My license, a few credit cards, my AAA card and that’s about it. It makes my wallet light and thin but it also means that all those specialty cards that build points or get discounts are never with me when I go shopping. That’s no longer the case thanks to CardStar, a small, free app that recreates the bar codes for all your store cards right on your iPhone. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

A few iPhone-related thoughts on a rainy northeastern afternoon. 1. Dear News Sources, Please stop saying that the iPod is dying. Please stop turning to the recent numbers which show a continuing growth in iPod touch and iPhone sales while showing a decrease in the sales of click-scroll iPods. To say that the “iPod is dying and Apple doesn’t care” is totally inaccurate. It’s another example of looking at the micro rather than stepping back for a second, looking at the larger picture, and trying to assess something for what it really is. The iPhone and the iPod touch are iPods. Their numbers are growing, and the old version is declining. THAT’S WHAT PRODUCTS DO.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I’m back into the thick of things after an extended vacation. One of the things on my mind was that, by the time I headed out for some rest, I was finding myself more than a bit flooded by everything that had to get done on a daily basis. As a result, I have committed myself to being more organized. This will, I hope, not only let me accomplish everything I need to do in a more timely manner but do so in a more relaxed manner, as well. Key to my renewed push for organization is… my iPhone. And key to using my iPhone to be more organized are a few specific apps and services. Here is the first in a series of posts on the subject. First up — reQall. I’ve written about reQall previously and have always found it to be a useful service. Until now, however, I hadn’t taken full advantage of what it has to offer… and it offers a lot!… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Alienware are having their annual back to school sale again. There are about 4 days and a few hours left to get little Timmy the machine he will need to get A’s in Fragging Society. That means about $200 to $300 off most of the range of desktops. I thought the Area -51 m15x had a neat school friendly hot swappable hard drive/optical drive bay. Just the thing for swapping some homework files at school with your peers. Shop Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Being the most practical adult on your block will most likely earn you points at the PTA meeting and the weekend youth soccer tournament, but for the rest of us, well, that’s why they invented pony cars. Back in the 1960s and ’70s, two-door muscle cars were rolling out of Detroit in grand fashion, carrying names like Mustang, Camaro and of course, Challenger.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
