Star Wars Force Trainer will excite your kids – probably result in emergency committal for you

Posted on 25 August 2009

If you believe the description for this Star Wars Force trainer, then you’ll don a headset and use Midichlorians ( a fictional term coined in Star Wars to describe microscopic life-forms that reside within the cells of all living things and communicate with the Force) to move this ping-pong ball up a tube. The harder you concentrate the further the ball moves. Another possible explanation is that as you sweat the weird headset measures perspiration and gives a signal to the tube mounted fan to move the ball. Either way it will excite your kids and cause your family to start planning an intervention. Star Wars Force Trainer – $119.99… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Evernote’s iPhone App Just Keeps Getting Better

Posted on 25 August 2009

Evernote’s iPhone app just keeps getting better and better. Each step is incremental, but they add up to an app that started out good but is now fantastic! This time around the speed has been improved, they made it simple to add your Evernote email address to contacts (not that it was difficult before) and they made grabbing a snapshot far speedier.  Are the speed improvements noticeable? In my testing this morning…yup! Now if Evernote would just make it possible to edit ALL notes on the iPhone instead of just some… More information on Evernote’s site. my6sense arrives in the iPhone App Store – smarter RSS reading and better sharing

Posted on 25 August 2009

my6Sense is a free application now available in the iPhone App Store. The program is a smart RSS feed reader that imports your feeds (Google Reader, iGoogle, myYahoo, Newsgater, Netvibes) and learns about stories you’re interested in by observing what you read and share. It will take time to see how well this works as the site suggests you use the program at least a week so it can build a knowledge of what you enjoy reading. Once it learns your tastes it prioritizes stories in your feeds that it thinks you will like. Immediately I noticed a few issues that may keep me from using it as my primary RSS feed reader – mainly that it’s slow to update and limits you… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Palm Pre App Catalog. 30 Apps in 30 Days. Day 24: Match.com

Posted on 24 August 2009

I am pretty happily married, and have been since before dating sites like Match.com became all the rage.  So, needless to say, I do not have an account at Match.com or any other similar sites.  That being said, I can certainly see the value they might offer the modern connected single.  In fact, my sister-in-law met her husband that way. In the interest of making sure this series is complete, therefore, I wanted to mention this app and make sure that interested individuals know that they can access their Match.com accounts from anywhere using their Palm Pre.  That being said, I found it odd that a niche… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Whitoken Theme for iPhone Live and in Some Color

Posted on 24 August 2009

The other day Dan posted about his excitement over the possible release of a theme for the iPod and iPhone called Whitoken. Well the theme’s first beta version has been released over at Mac Themes and I spent some time tinkering with the iPhone version of it. It should be noted, this theme is not for the beginner.  It requires a good deal of set up but once finished looks amazing. Dan asked in his post if it was real.  As I showed him tonight, it’s real and it may just open up a whole new level of customization for the iPhone. I’ll let the picture speak for themselves.  Click on to check it out.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Color Claw For iPhone Gets Update. Fixes Issues.

Posted on 24 August 2009

About a week ago I posted a review for the iPhone app ColorClaw.  I was having serious issues with my photos losing aspect ratio and becoming distorted.  All of the photos I used were taken with my iPhone 3GS and were not adjusted before using the app.  I was contacted later that day by Andrew Crawford from Green Parrot Pictures who was very concerned with the issues I was having.  Through many emails and some trouble shooting, he was able to send me an update within two days. Here are some before and after photos. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks: Learning Spanish with the Rosetta Stone TOTALe System

Posted on 24 August 2009

I have always wanted to learn a foreign language, to be able to converse fluently with people from other cultures, and to basically not feel like a total tool tourist when traveling. I’ve also always heard that the best time to easily learn a second (or third) language is during one’s formative years, and that even by high-school or college it gets much more difficult. It’s no exaggeration to say that I am well past formative, and I’ve been out of high school for 24 years. While I have never believed that one could ever reach a point where learning something new would be impossible, I do think that there is a… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: Black Sigil: Blade of the Exile for Nintendo DS

Posted on 24 August 2009

There is a fine line somewhere between homage and outright copying, and also a line between recreating the best elements of a classic in a modern setting and bringing something that was shackled by its’ time into the future warts and all. Black Sigil is a game that captures much of the magic from the 16-bit era of jRPG’s such as Chrono Trigger, Vay (recently released for the iPhone), the Lunar series and so on, but it also brings along a load of things many gamers might have hoped would have stayed back in the 1990′s. If you can’t tell already, I have pretty mixed feelings about Black Sigil.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Trying Out Maghound, the Online Magazine Subscription Service

Posted on 24 August 2009

It’s no secret that I like to read, and anymore it seems that most of my reading is done on the Amazon Kindle DX. Unfortunately, that is not the best format for reading glossy magazines. Until the day comes that there is a color Kindle DX, I will probably still be reading the dead tree versions…which means I can wholly appreciate the concept of a service like Maghound. Maghound is an “online membership service that allows you to choose, change, and manage all the magazines delivered to your home.” In a nutshell, Maghound is a subscription service with monthly service plan tiers: three subscriptions for $4.95, five for $7.95, seven for $9.95, or if you have copious amounts of free time to read – eight or more for $9.95 + $1 for each extra title over 7. I have been given a chance to try out the base subscription for a year, which sounds like the perfect opportunity for this voracious reader…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
