This morning I had downloaded some music and movies to my PSP for an upcoming business trip, and checked the ‘Network Update’ and saw that there was a new update available. Naturally I updated, as I am not a believer in ‘custom firmware’ on philosophical grounds. The new version is 6.00, and as you install the update you get to look at the release notes (word to Sony – I LOVE this!)
Here is some of what was in the notes:
* Games can now be grouped and displayed in folders based on their expire date under [Game].
* Under [Settings], [Network Update] has been changed to [System Update]. Under [System Update], you can now choose how to update the system software.
* The number of colors that can be selected under [Settings] > [Theme Settings] has been increased.
* Revisions to strengthen security have been added. (Internet Browser)
The words ‘based on their expire date’ seem to indicate that games will expire, which makes it seem logical that digital game rentals are planned for the PSP. Since the PSP Go can’t play the UMD rentals I can get through GameFly or Blockbuster, it makes sense that a digital service would be offered. I wonder, though – will it be Sony-only, or will others be able to get in on the action? We’ll just have to wait until after the PSP Go Launch in a few weeks!

Cool update – I was buying the PS1 classic ‘Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain’ on the PSN Store and when downloading it actually estimated ‘time remaining’ in addition to % completed!
