The speed on it comes from the fact that Opera has servers that read the data and process it, compressing it prior to sending it to your handset - in essence, a proxy. This gives you amazing speed on your mobile device, but sacrifices security/privacy.
Any SSL-enabled site you may go to (your bank, PayPal, etc.) will be encrypted in communication from that site to the Opera servers, but it is decrypted there and then sent to you. Now, the connection between Opera's servers and your mobile browser is also encrypted, but still, the information which is normally encrypted between you and the bank has been decrypted along the way by this third party.
See the Opera Mini FAQ under the heading Is there any end-to-end security between my handset and — for example — paypal.com or my bank?.

The only concern I have with Opera Mini is an issue with one of its greatest advantages.
