MMS Is Coming… and I’m still not sure what is so exciting about it. Admittedly I have never used MMS on ANY phone but still… why would I choose to use MMS over emailing images when emailing works just fine?

I am, however, open to finding out WHY it is such a big deal. So I turned to my friends in the hope that they would enlighten me. Here’s what they said…

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. +Dan Cohen

I am perfectly fine using email for images and prefer to receive them that way. It is crazy how many people ask me about the iPhone and always say, yeah, but you can’t text pictures. Ummm no, but you just email them. They usually look at me confused and put their Razr back into their pocket.

k, here’s the thing. even on smartphones, not everyone has a data or e-mail package. However, they do have a txt package; and MMS is part of that. Its included in the price. everyone else that has a txt package, gets MMS for the same price as txt-ing…. everyone except iPhone users who get txt only, until now.

This allows people to send photos, sound, movies, etc.; without having to e-mail something. that’s why its a big deal. Not everyone is email savvy; but everyone can txt.

I predict AT&T will release this very late Friday — probably 6 or 7pm (I know some sites say early afternoon) so that they can let people work into it over the normally slower weekend.

Won’t make a bit of difference to me if MMS goes down for a couple days — I just hope data doesn’t..

    Christopher,
Not everyone has texting. It is an extra cost option on Verizon, on top of my data package. I can’t block incoming texts so the pictures you mms to me costs me $0.25 each, whereas e-mail is free. I’ve never had the need or desire to text, I like my e-mail.

I’m notnsure I agree with that it’s easier. It’s not easier on a smartphone – you still have to address a text message. it may be easier in a dumb phone where email addressing is more difficult, but on a smartphone its all the same – and smart phones should already have email/data and aren’t subject to “per message” charge models. So MMS is a big yawn to me but I can see the relevance if you deal with a lot of non-smartphone users.

Actually, I am extremely happy that this is coming out! All this talk about our smartphones sending MMS to dumbphones we’ll, aren’t our smartphone dumb for not having the capability to send to dumbphones? It’s like saying you’re book smart but you have no common sense. Ok, maybe bad analogy but on a serious note, this should have been there to begin with and with video capability, 1.3 megapixel camera, all that is crap to me if I can’t do anything with it.

Emailing pictures, yes, that is a work around but email is email. It’s extra work. Dumbphones are dumb because it can’t do emails properly. MMS, it’s simple, it’s dumb hence can speak to dumb phones.

In a nutshell, now our smartphones can be dumb who can speak to dumb and still look smart. Yeah this makes sense somehow. Anyway, time to check to see if my carrier update is available for for my smartphone!
