Review: Aqua Jigsaw for iPhone OS

Posted on 11 September 2009

Over the summer my family takes a long vacation at our home in the Outer Banks.  One of our favorite past times to do at the beach house is to all gather around the kitchen table with a large piece count jigsaw puzzle.  We usually get one going and then come back to it over the time we’re there and end up finishing a few during our stay. With Aqua Jigsaw from 99 Games, I don’t have to wait until next summer to continue the jigsaw puzzle tradition my family enjoys. I can keep it going right on my iPhone.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: RDM+ for iPhone & BlackBerry Really Puts Your Computer On Your Phone

Posted on 11 September 2009

You’re out of the office, get a call and the boss needs a quick change on a presentation.  You’re an IT admin, you’re enjoying some time out of the house for the weekend and you need to reboot a server –  while your laptop is back at home.  You want to show off a photo of the kids from vacation while you’re at a soccer game, but then you realize it’s back  on your home computer.   What do all of these scenarios have in common?  Each situation used to require you to physically use the computer that is in the office or at home.  Before, if you didn’t have your laptop or computer with you, well, you were just out of luck. Not anymore.  If you have RDM+ you can access and control your computer straight from your phone.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Is it me or does a one way Titanic memorial cruise seem like a bad idea?

Posted on 11 September 2009

File this one under just plain creepy. UK Travel agency Miles Morgan say’s they’re organizing a 100 year anniversary cruise to commemorate the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. They plan to sail the same route (starting April 8, 2012) the original Titanic took exactly 100 years ago. They’ll stop on the site where the ship sank and hold a brief memorial and lecture. Our voyage of a lifetime will sail from Southampton on 8th April 2012 the twelve night cruise on board the MS Balmoral and will follow the RMS Titanic’s original itinerary, passing by Cherbourg on the French coast before calling into the Irish port of Cobh. From here the ship will sail across the Atlantic, arriving Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Carrying a Blackberry and an iPhone?

Posted on 11 September 2009

photo courtesy of CapMac iPhone SIG So much has already been written about the iPhone versus Blackberry, but what about some peaceful co-existence, or maybe overlapping contentment? I carry an iPhone for personal use and a Blackberry 8110 (I know I know, but its corporate issue with an EXTREME IT Policy).  What I’m thinking about is figuring out a way to tradeoff using a Blackberry Bold/Javelin for personal as well..  Carrier plans aside, I like both platforms and sometimes its nice to just carry one charger for both personal and business.. Are you carrying both an iPhone and a Blackberry?  What have you found that… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Posted on 11 September 2009

With GetFugu you “see it, say it and get it.” Available now in the iTunes App Store GetFugu allows iPhone users to, using their iPhone’s camera, snap a picture of a item’s logo.  The application then, using image recognition can go out to the web and bring back the user information on the item. Remembering 9/11

Posted on 11 September 2009

photo by Jerry Salamone It seems like only yesterday, it seems like a lifetime ago. On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial jetliners. Two were crashed into the Twin Towers of the Word Trade Center in New York City, one into the Pentagon in Washington DC, and one into a field in Pennsylvania. Nearly three thousand people lost their lives that morning, and nothing has been the same since. Anyone who was of an age to understand what was happening that day will always remember where they were when they first heard. Those who watched the news as… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

What Do You Call The iPhone When “Smartphone” Doesn’t Cut It?

Posted on 11 September 2009

In an article on ZDNet Sam Diaz makes an interesting point related to yesterday’s announcement of the Motorola Cliq. He writes: Do you see that little green button down on the lower right corner of the screen? That’s the dialer – you know, like, for a phone call… Call these devices smartphones if you’d like – but increasingly, the phone part of the device is just another feature, another widget on the home page. There seems to be a good deal of this going around these days, what with the iPod touch being referred to as “a great pocket computer” during the recent Apple music event. And it seems to line up well with my experience as of late.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Live from Electronic Arts’ Blogger Day – Win a Free Game

Posted on 11 September 2009

I’m at the annual Blogger’s Day at gaming publisher Electronic Arts (MySims, Madden NFL 10, Need for Speed, The Beatles RockBand) in Redwoood City California where I’ll join another dozen writers in touring the EA campus, playing games, sitting on our asses, playing games and finally buying a bunch of games at the EA store. When we get tired we’ll sit down to eat pizza and play some more games. In between all that strenous activity EA gives an update and demo on what games are in their pipeline and we also tour the campus and get to look at all sorts of really cool old gaming machines and reminisce about how great the game pong… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Soundcraft Releases the New Si1 Digital Console

Posted on 11 September 2009

Soundcraft has released the Si1 Digital Console that would be more at home in a recording studio, concert venue or house of worship than your home podcasting setup.  That doesn’t stop me from wanting this like I do! The Si1 has 32 mic inputs mapped on 16 faders, and with four dedicated Stereo Line channels, four dedicated FX Returns from the four stereo Lexicon FX processors, it can mix up to 48 inputs.  There are 16 physical XLR inputs for microphones as well.  All of that means you can record and mix a lot of tracks!  A lot more than I would ever need, anyway! The console can also be set up offline with the included… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Your Kids Will Love These Food Label (Fruit) Loop-holes

Posted on 10 September 2009

In an age where fresh food prices are skyrocketing and fat & sugar filled processed foods are being constantly made cheaper and cheaper with fillers, it is harder and harder for families to make healthy choices. The nutritional labels certainly help, but for many the time and math required to cross-reference Fat vs. Calories vs. Protein vs. Fiber and so on is just overwhelming. So there was much relief recently when an industry collective started the ‘Smart Choice’ label program. The goal was to make it easy to see what foods offered the best nutritional choices. Great in theory … but in reality, not so wonderful.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
