ZoomSafer Launches BlackBerry Beta to Prevent Distracted Driving

Posted on 08 September 2009

The dangers of driving while using your mobile phone are very  real.   While public service announcements and state laws requiring hands-free use are steps in the right direction, there really hasn’t been a means — short of just turning your device off while in the car –  to put a stop to the distraction those texts, emails, and IMs cause.  ZoomSafer aims to change that. Motorola, Google, and Mediafly

Posted on 08 September 2009

Carson Conant, CEO of Mediafly, Inc.  let us know that Mediafly was recently accepted into Motorola’s special developer program.  The program will promote applications from developers to be featured on Motorola’s upcoming Android handsets. Motorola has struggled as Apple’s iPhone, RIM’s BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Nokia, and even other Android handsets (most notably from HTC) have grown their smartphone market share.   As the Chicago-Tribune recently noted, “Android’s success is a key pillar in Motorola’s turnaround strategy.” By implementing Android, Motorola is hoping to tap a community of mobile application developers who are already developing for HTC or Samsung Android handsets.  Motorola has taken it a step further, by providing incentives… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

HTC’s Tattoo: Cute? Yes. Unexpected? Not Entirely.

Posted on 08 September 2009

It’s great to see the new Android handsets trickling in, and as usual – HTC is leading the pack with a new cutie called the Tattoo. Of course, the minute a case is put on it, the cuteness factor will all but evaporate. So is there anything else that sets the Tattoo apart from every other matte black handset? According to HTC, “people [will be] able to design and purchase their own unique covers or search and select from popular cover designs, altering the look of the phone to reflect their mood or individual tastes.” It will be the second phone to “embody HTC Sense, a mobile experience focused on putting people at the centre by making your phone work in a more simple and natural way.” And under the hood? HTC Tattoo integrates Google’s innovative mobile services including: Google Maps, search, Google Mail, and Android market where users can download thousands of popular applications and games. It also comes complete with a broad variety of hardware features including a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, 3.5mm stereo headset jack and expandable microSD memory So the question arises… Will you show your mama this Tattoo?… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Dev. Team warns of new iPhone update

Posted on 08 September 2009

This one comes straight from the iPhone Dev. Team, the group responsible for bringing you all the tools which jailbreak and or unlock your iPhone. In a nutshell it looks like the Dev. Team believes an iPhone update is coming this week (maybe to provide MMS?), and they warn that if your phone was unlocked using their ultrasnow tool, not only will you lose the unlock, you may just lose it permanently, never being able to unlock your phone again. This week Apple will be all over the news with their announcements at Wednesday’s “Let’s Rock” event.   But with so many new owners of the iPhone 3GS, and with so many new owners Continue reading on Gear Diary …

It’s Only Rock And Roll But Will We Like It???

Posted on 08 September 2009

Well, tomorrow is the day. The Apple faithful will gather to hear the latest news from Cupertino. As usual the rumors are swirling about. There will be a tablet! There won’t be a tablet. Steve Jobs will take the stage. Steve Jobs won’t take the stage. The iPod Classic is dead! The iPod classic is getting a camera. iPods with cameras are ready to go. iPods with cameras are delayed by a production glitch. (This latest rumor has gained significant steam over the last day.) It really is amazing the degree to which Apple can stir interest and excitement in the blogosphere by (seemingly) doing nothing. There is, however, one thing we do know for sure…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Official Flickr iPhone App hits App Store

Posted on 08 September 2009

We all know how popular the iPhone’s camera is.  And we also know how equally popular the photo sharing service Flickr is. Now the two truly are in sync with today’s iTunes App Store release of the official Flickr application for the iPhone OS. The free application allows you to share pictures you’ve taken with your iPhone’s camera, geo-tag them and or upload them to sets. I can’t help but wonder if the release was timed in conjunction with the pending rumored announcement of the new iPods with cameras. Get it here, in the App… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Skype may be vulnerable to Trojan.Peskspy that records your calls

Posted on 08 September 2009

There’s a new Trojan horse computer virus that may affect Skype users. Although there aren’t any widespread cases of this Trojan actually impacting Skype users. According to Symantec Security Response: Trojan.Peskspy listens in the data traveling between the Skype process and the audio device, it gathers the audio independently of any application-specific protocols or encryption applied by Skype when it passes voice data at the network level. Essentially, it sits below these security measures, recording the audio at the Windows level—before outbound audio from the microphone gets to Skype and after incoming audio leaves Skype and reaches the speakers. Finally, the Trojan contains a back door, which enables an attacker to have the stolen audio conversations sent to a predetermined location, where they can later Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks: Week Two into the Rosetta Stone TOTALe Program

Posted on 08 September 2009

Oh this week was harrrrrrrd. Let’s see…when we last left off my goal was to get through four more lessons this week, and be up to number seven. Well guess what? There is no seven, and it basically took me all week to get through lesson four. Maybe I should have paid more attention to the way the TOTALe program is set up, but better late than never. Evidently the lessons are broken into Units, and Unit One (at least) is broken into four major sections, each composed of separate lessons. The sections start off easily enough, and I got through the first three relatively painlessly. But section four was a total killer.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Fanboys…friend or foe?

Posted on 07 September 2009

(Cowritten with Dan) America may run on Dunkin, but sometimes it seems like the internet runs on something else; caffeinated, sugary and at times, rude and disrespectful. Fanboys (and girls). You know who we’re talking about. They are the first to yell “TROLL” if you dare denigrate their favorite subject. They are the first to jump to the defense of the oft undefendable actions of their heroes in a manner not dissimilar to the way in which one would hopefully defend the honor of their their significant other. And they are always the first to post on an internet forum when anything, good or bad, is written. At the same time, they are also the first to try a new product, discuss ad naseum every aspect of a software update, and blindly take the role of cheerleader regardless of the reality of the situation. Yes, they are the next generation of those who continue to argue endlessly about whether “Star Trek: The Next Generation” or “Star Trek: The Original Series” was the better show, despite both being off the air for years. And sadly, they are the ones who will increasingly attack anyone who dares disagree with them.… Continue reading on [...]
