Still hanging onto your Windows Mobile 6.0/6.1 device? Not sure about this whole 6.5 upgrade? Really jealous that people with 6.5 can use the totally awesome and well stocked Windows Mobile Marketplace? Well, first of all, it’s not well stocked, so you can drop your jealousy a tad. And if you head over to xda-developers, a kind soul has already stripped out the Marketplace cab and made it available to all of us that are still on 6.0/6.1, so you won’t have to shell out for an HTC Pure just to buy apps on your phones.

Marketplace loaded on my Samsung Propel Pro with no problems, and is remarkably snappy. There are a small handful of apps in each category but nothing earth shattering thus far, though bear in mind I am using a Windows Mobile Standard device and so the amount of apps available is going to be lower than the professional side. The layout is uninspiring but easy to navigate, and installation of free apps is quick and easy.

A few quibbles from this quick review: It looks like free trials have to be loaded separately, so it is up to each company to offer a free trial in the Marketplace (versus downloading a free trial from a software store like Gear Diary’s). Also, while it does allow for billing through your wireless provider, not all programs appeared to allow that option, and your credit card information needs to be entered on your device (as opposed to having a website where you can manage that information).

I can’t see myself using this regularly until the selection fills out quite a bit, but it is a nice option to have it in case I want to install a new game or need a utility on the go. Bear in mind that Marketplace is NOT officially supported for Windows Mobile 6.0/6.1, so if you choose to install it you are doing so at your own risk. Gear Diary is not responsible, and we recommend backing up all your data before installing this or any new program to your device.
