Snow Leopard is hungry…for your user data!

It’s been a bad, bad week for data of all types, it seems…

Macrumors is reporting on a new bug in Snow Leopard that wipes out user data. Apparently, if you’ve previously had guest logins enabled on your Leopard machine, then followed Apple’s instructions for a Snow Leopard upgrade (as in, not a clean install), a guest logging in under Snow Leopard could wipe out your primary user data.

Now is a good time to double check that your Time Machine backups are all set, and delete any guest logins you may have set up under Leopard. From comments at Macrumors, it looks like if you set up a guest login under Snow Leopard you are fine; it is only legacy logins carried over from Leopard that can cause this unfortunate bug.

CNET is reporting that Apple is aware of the issue and will be looking into a solution.
