Early this week it was Geohot who released his blackra1n tool for jailbreaking any device running the newest iPhone OS 3.1.2. However, at present, blackra1n is only available for computers running Windows.
Now the iPhone Dev. Team has upgraded its Pwnage Tool to work the same way. The newest release, Pwnage Tool 3.1.4, is available for computers running Mac OS and will jailbreak any device running iPhone OS 3.1.2 (except the new 3G iPod Touch) as well.
Summary:
- The iPod Touch 3G is NOT supported
- The iPhone 3Gs is now supported out of the box with Pwnage Tool 3.1.4 (or if you upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes.)
- The iPod 2G is still supported in 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbreaken (we’ll updates this is there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken iPod Touch 2G owners.)
You can read all about the tool here and as always proceed at your own risk.

Finally made the leap last night. I have a 3GS with OS 3.1.2.
The process was completely painless and I now have a desktop wallpaper behind my icons, apps that can run in the background, and a free GPS!
And I know that if it all goes wrong I can use iTunes to restore to factory defaults.
