This entry is part 19 of 23 in the series GearGames Weekly

borderlands

Welcome back to the GearGames weekly video game release feature here at Gear Diary! Last week was strong … but this week is just crazy! Some highlights include Borderlands, a hybrid FPS / RPG / Co-op / open world / post-apocalyptic shooter that hits PS3 & XBOX360 this week and PC next week. Also huge this week – albeit with a younger audience – is Bakugan Battle Brawlers, the first game based on the very popular ‘catch em all’ style game featuring magnetic balls that transform into monsters.

There is also the PSP release of the DS game Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars , which is one of the top all-time DS games and my personal pick for best game in the GTA series bar none. There is so much more – I mean, there are 8 games for the PS2 when the PS3 is nearly 3 years old! There are actually plenty of solid releases I haven’t mentioned, so check out the list!

Some notes from last week:

  • Where the Wild Things Are
  • - Apparently the ‘lousy movie tie-in’ is alive and well.

  • Dreamkiller
  • - Mediocre budget-feel shooter.

  • Brutal Legend
  • - Not the masterpiece some had hoped but a solid and enjoyable game.

  • MagnaCarta 2
  • - Pretty decent but not a great follow-up to a classic.

  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
  • - One of the best games of the year.

  • A Boy and His Blob
  • - Solid and fun puzzle platformer.

  • Half-Minute Hero
  • - Very original and fresh take on the genre.

  • Obscure: The Aftermath
  • - Average horror survival game.

  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
  • - Look here for the definition of ‘mediocre shovelware’.

What games am I playing now? Well, at this point I am playing 8 PC games, 6 PSP games, 2 Mac games, 7 DS games, and a few Wii games, mostly for reviews … here are a couple:

  • PC: Risen – As I continue to pour hours in to this my enjoyment of this excellent but imperfect game only deepend.
  • PC: LEGO Star Wars The Complete Saga – I loved this on the DS and they have greatly enhanced it for the PC release, so it is just wonderful fun for the family!
  • PSP: Obscure: The Aftermath – not too bad, but not terribly scary

So what are you playing? Chime in below!

Enjoy gaming!
