I’ve carried smartphones for years, starting with the Palm Treo 650. While it has never been for business, nor has it been a dealbreaker if I couldn’t use one, I’ve always liked the convenience of having what amounts to a small computer in my pocket. Yesterday, I discovered just how helpful having one can be when plans change on the fly.
My fiancee and I are getting married next year. Originally, our plan was to get married at a vineyard, since we like wine and it would be a very pretty location. Unfortunately, we live in NJ, where the weather in October can be unpredictable. Yesterday it was freezing cold, with bouts of nasty, driving, cold rain all day. My parents picked us up to go look at the winery we were considering, but in the course of the drive up the four of us realized one very key point: the winery has no inside space for events, so we’d be stuck with everyone under a tent if we had a bad day next year. Not good.
After a few minutes of brainstorming, we decided to head up towards the winery anyway, since we liked that area of New Jersey, and see if we could Google some other locations to scout that might include indoor and outdoor facilities. Thanks to my handy Propel Pro, I had NJ.com up in minutes, and I’d found a list of 10 great wedding locations the site recommended in that corner of the state. All four of us fell in love with the second place we saw, and it looks like that might be our location. It’s gorgeous, the staff is courteous and friendly, we had a great time touring the grounds with the general manager, and it all happened because we were able to Google on the fly. What could have been a disappointing little road trip turned into us stumbling on the perfect location. All thanks to my smartphone.
