Some might wonder if Amazon is quietly sweating the release of the Nook and the surge of excitement for Barnes and Noble’s ebook platform…but today Amazon has reason to celebrate. Apparently, this little platform called Kindle has become their best selling product! They also had phenomenal earnings, continuing the good news from the tech world after Apple’s earnings Monday night.
And maybe you’d like to get in on the wonderful world of Kindle, but you hate e-ink and you don’t have an iPod touch/iPhone? Good news, Amazon is promising a Kindle reader for PCs, with a Mac version rumored on the horizon as well! While this might be good for quick reading when your boss isn’t looking when you’re at home on your own PC, I think this is especially neat for netbook users and touchscreen/tablet PC users. Apparently there will be support for swiping and multitouch as well as traditional non-touch inputs. It’s not available yet, but you can sign up here to receive a notification when it is ready.
The timing of this is a bit suspect, coming on the heels of Barnes and Noble’s big day in the sun, but it is welcome news! The more places to read ebooks, the more they will become mainstream. Hopefully this is a precursor to Kindle apps being available on blackberries, android devices, and windows phones!
