iPhone As A GPS- The Good, The Bad and The Good Again | Gear Diary-1.jpg

After some initial issues with one iPhone GPS app I have been using AT&T Navigator and finding it quite useful. It is fast, accurate and the redirecting process works well to help avoid traffic issues. The one downside of the app is that it requires an active data connection. Living where I do, however, it has not been much of an issue. Yes, the service requires an ongoing monthly fee of $9.99 but it also means that I always have the most current maps. Not a bad trade-off.

Well, thanks to Telenav we have a huge giveaway of three YEAR LONG subscriptions to the service.

AT&T Navigator iPhone app was developed by Telenav. Some of the main features of the applications include:

• Voice and onscreen turn-by-turn directions complete with spoken street names, visual indication of the next upcoming maneuver and estimated arrival times.

• The ability to preplan a trip online and send it to the phone to start navigating as soon as you’re in the vehicle.

• Instant access to 10 million business listings including restaurants, hotels, Wi-Fi hotspots, ATMs and many more. In addition, the ability to search for gas stations by price is included.

• Real-time traffic updates with the option to reroute around the congestion. Ability to send e-mail commuter alerts to help determine the best time to head to and leave work.

Here is a video of it in action.

Telenav has been kind enough to offer three one year subscriptions (a $120 value) to the AT&T Navigator service to our readers.

RULES:

To enter to win simply tell us

(a) why you need the service and

(b) how you would use it.

We will run the contest for one week and pick a winner next week (Thursday, November 5th).

The winners will be picked randomly from all entrants and will be posted in a separate post next Thursday evening.

Good luck to all, and our thanks to the folks at Telenav!

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. +Dan Cohen

While I don’t need it that much, this would be great for my wife. She calls often enough to ask for directions when she’s out and about. This could be really helpful. It could also be great to avoid odd detours when we’re traveling. We’ve been hit by some very poorly marked detours before when in strange country and had no idea how to continue our route.

As a grad student with a 30 mile round trip commute to school I get stuck in traffic quite a bit. It would be great to be able to find the quickest way before I leave home so that I can spend more time studying and less time sitting. Thanks guys!

    a) I need the service because I get lost a lot living in Las Vegas. b) I would use it to keep myself from getting lost and be on time for a change.

My wife drives a lot for work, and would appreciate the help in getting around and finding restaurants near her job/meeting site. The real time traffic updates would help her get to and from the meeting sites too.

  • asfrank16

My wife needs it to find her way around DC whenever she goes out. Now she has to borrow my car (with GPS in it). This way she could find her way with her iPhone instead.

I like to travel, even though I have an indash dvd nav system, it is 4 yrs old. I am still up in the air debating whether to buy a separate gps system or get a gps app on my iphone. This would help make my decision a lot easier. =)

Hey this would be soo great for me. I always have my girlfriend give directions while using google maps and she is about as technologically savvy as Wilma Flinstone so we ALWAYS end up taking a wrong turn somewhere… This will finally end the fighting! :)

  • crloga1

This would be great. There is tons of construction going on where I live right now. The downside to most of the GPS systems for the Iphone is no live traffic. I used TeleNav when I was on Sprint and loved it. This service would allow me to avoid the traffic in my area as much as possible.

I travel quite a bit for my job, both in state via a personal vehicle or out of state via airplane and rental cars. I need this application to help me find all the places I need to go both for business and for pleasure along the way. I would use this to help me find the quickest routes through unknown city traffic. I think that would be awesome. I would also love the instant access to the most current POI database to help me find some place to eat or stop and visit a new tourist destination.

I need this because I am very soon to move to a new and strange city. While I don’t mind driving around in circles all that much there are other things to consider.

    1. Bad for the environment
    2. My wife will have none of that.

I think those pretty much cover it. So in conclusion, please let me have this in order to save the marriage and the planet.

    Thank you.

The app would perfect and so very needed. I do roofing repair and construction. I need to find different houses throughout the day. I currently just use my iPhone maps and just read directions off the list. It would be nice to just listen to the AT&T nav app and pay more attention to the road. I have thought of getting a standalone gps but I want my iPhone to do everything for me. It’s close now but the telnav AT&T app would just seal the deal.

I moved from AZ almost 7 years ago while my youngest daughter stayed behind for school and work. To this day she still calls me asking for directions to the doctor, dentist or to tell me she’s at a certain location “how do I get home?” Although I lived in Tucson for 13 years and know my way around pretty well, I’m starting to forget cross streets etc. Having a copy of AT&T Navigator would not only help me direct my daughter away from the bad areas of Tucson but it might slow down the graying of my hair :p

I need it because my husband has our gps mounted in his car and there is nothing but the standard maps app on my iphone to help me find places in my car. I would love to use this at&t app later this month as i travel out of state since my phone will always be with me I won’t have to worry about folding maps and getting lost in cities I’m not familiar with. And then of course i would love to have my own nav app when I’m back home driving around as well :)

At my age, I have sadly come to the conclusion that all of my ‘NEEDS’ have been/ are being met. But I just got my 1st iPhone 3GS on the 29th, and wow. ‘WANT’, now that is another story. Been using the Cobra brand of GPS (yes, they are better known for their CB radios) and it is built like a CB radio (6″x4″x3″). So, the $200 Garmin was going to be a possible purchase for my upcoming cross-country move this December. (Points (a) and (b)) It sure would be nice to use the iPhone for it and not clutter my dashboard with several devices (especially from a theft-deterrent point of view).

Thanks to Wayne’s advice, I’m picking up an iPhone over the weekend. Since I’m a directional moron, this will keep me from getting lost. I honestly got lost going to a client who was 1.2 miles from my house according to Google Maps. I’ve been in my house for about 3 years and I get lost still going to Best Buy. It’s 2.5 miles away. Navigation on the iPhone would make not look like a tool bag. :)

  • http://www.world2larry.com lwcox

I could use some navigation. I have a TOM TOM but my wife decided that it would look better in her car. So I am left with my memory for my navigation tool…..

What were we talking about…oh yeah…I could use a navigation software for my iPhone.

    Thanks,

    The absent minded traveler.

I would absolutely LOVE this service! I just started a new career that requires me to travel through the Hampton Roads area in Virginia. I can’t afford a conventional GPS unit until things take off. I have tried using the Google maps app but it just does not cut it. THIS WOULD BE A GREAT BLESSING TO ME! :)

  • bamfhacker

My wife is always telling me which way to go and it always turns out to be the long way. I would love to get places faster by going the right way

I would use it to get places faster.

  • Christopher Spera

I love this service. I won’t be on AT&T without it, as I need to have GPS service, because I can get lost in a wet paper bag, and can’t find my way out with a fork and a flashlight.

    Hope I win!!

  • http://www.mobilitysite.com breley

I don’t have an iPhone, so this doesn’t constitute an entry, but I just would like to add my two cents since I won a year subscription from over at Justanothermobilemonday.com for my Pantech Matrix Pro I won at here Gear Diary, hopefully without sounding like a flack.

As many readers know, being tech-savvy causes friends and relatives and THEIR friends and relatives to petition for tech help, and finding these folks scattered throughout a large city can be tricky. Traffic snarls and roadwork can really put a damper on arriving at destinations in a timely fashion, especially if you’ve got school-age kids with all sorts of appointments and after-school goings-on popping up at the last minute. Having access to spot-on current conditions navigation that you can get with Navigator to better “defrag” free time is a precious commodity for me! This is a great prize, and I think the winners will be pleased. Good luck to the entrants!
