Many iPod Touch fans were disappointed a few weeks ago when Apple announced the only significant change to the iPod Touch was the addition of a faster processor. The camera that had been rumored for so long was no where to be found. If this photograph is any indication perhaps we might see an iPod Touch with a camera after all. It seems case manufacturer DLO has released, at Best Buy, an arm band style case for the iPod Touch complete with an image of a Touch with a cut out for the camera. Two things seem possible here. DLO made these cases in anticipation of the September announcement, found there to be no… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Last week Wayne and I had the opportunity to sit in on an NDA workshop discussing the new and updated features of Windows Mobile 6.5. Wayne got hung up and couldn’t attend (pesky day job getting in the way, again!), but I was able to sit in an hear a bit about 6.5 and Marketplace, Microsoft’s new software store for Windows Phones. Those of you who read our GearChat back in February will recognize many of the new 6.5 screens, and yes – the Zune-like interface is still present. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Hotmail users have been advised to change their passwords after a massive security breach occurred where over 10,000 account details have been posted publicly online. Users on the hotmail.com, msn.com, and live.com domains are all affected. Data that was posted online has since been removed, but was mainly European-based account details from letters A – B. Microsoft has encouraged users to change their passwords immediately. More information can be found on the Windows Live Team Blog. Hotmail: stolen email account details appear online (via @pobox)… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

¡Hola! When I left off last week, I was near the end of Unit 2, which meant a lot of review work and another upcoming milestone. Would this milestone slay me as the first one had? Would I finally “get” the difference between morado (purple), marrón (brown), gris (gray), conoso (gray) and conosa (gray)?… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I. Am. A. Mobile. Computing. User… Period. I live for converged devices, laptops, netbooks, and data on the go. I’ve got unlimited data on my Smartphone account; and have tethered my laptop to my phone when I need to be online in a pinch. When I travel, I need to take it with me; and when it comes to airport security, I dread the TSA required aerobics and mandatory disrobing… Thankfully, to help make things easier, Skooba Design has created the CheckThrough Backpack. Let’s take a quick look to see how (and if) this thing makes traveling easier… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Last April I reviewed the SoundID 300 Bluetooth Headset. I described it as “Comfortable; Great sound on both ends; Looks good.” Did I really like it? Well let’s just say that since April it is the headset I most regularly use. So how do you improve on at headset that already is comfortable to wear, not obvious when worn and offers great sound? The company has found a way. Here’s a look at the new SoundID 400 Bluetooth Headset…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

A demo of Flash Player 10 running on a Palm Pre has just been released on YouTube. According to Adobe they expect to bring a version of Flash to nearly every mobile platform (Windows Mobile, RIM, WebOS, Google Android, and Symbian OS) this year or next. Notice any particular missing platform? So far Adobe has only indicated that they’re working with Apple but that the development will be on a separate timetable. The promise of Flash Player on mobile platforms is that much of the multimedia content currently available only through more powerful desktop computers could instantly become available on smartphones with Adobe Flash capabilities. This would potentially save developers from having to write multiple versions of an application and could create a large number of feature rich applications able… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

One thing you can always count on is the constant change happening in technology. Usually the changes are positive, but every now and again there is a trend that emerges that — at the very least — makes everyone scratch their heads a bit. One such trend that is now making headway is the constant application upgrade fee. Wayne touched on this last week with Tweetie 2, and Dan reemphasized the issue — and the long-term costs to the consumer — with the upgrade charging for Boxcar, Simplify Media, Twittelerator Pro, NewsStand, and Filemaker Pro’s Bento database software. From a developer perspective, yes, the updates and charge model means that continued improvements can be implemented — but, as the consumer, do you feel nickel and dimed by the practice? Sound off in the comments — and while you do, let’s take a look at a few other highlights from last week… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
