Most of us have never seen let alone used the device so it is pretty hard to pass judgment on it let alone its chances for success. Thus-far it has been their (excellent) pr machine and some initial reviews from people heavily involved in the tech world. That is all good and well but neither can determine if there is a real market for this particular device or not.
We've heard the hype machine before... many times.
When real world use over a period of time is reported we'll have a better idea of the device and its future. The real information will only come down the line however. I mean, who would have thought that Apple would be increasing production by 20% so many months after the iPhone 3GS was released??

I’m taking a “wait and see” approach. Not that the iphone is supposed to be pink or blue, but it's pretty clear the Verizon Droid is not going for the Hello Kitty theme.

Didn’t mean to ‘diss’ women, just that like kids toys, generally speaking there are mobile phone/smart phone designs that clearly cater to one sex or another. I have non-techy guys here at work that just want to pick the thing up, and get email, calls, texts, and go. Of course, the cool ringtones need to be available as well. So, please stop with the stereotype. As a woman, I have never owned a pink phone, and don't have any plans too.
I do agree with the assessment that iPhone users are not switching for the Droid, unless they are sick of the issues with AT&T's network. This is the first notable smartphone on Verizon's network, so there will be a good number of inhouse upgrades.

I just have to say that woman are not the only ones out there that want a simple smartphone.
