The OS and the hardware are now separated. Anybody can build a high powered PC, so now anybody can build a high powered phone and drop the Android OS on it. There is no 'special sauce' in these phones. Without proprietary IP like Apple and Palm has, the Android smartphone business will be a razer thin margin commodity business where only the most efficient manufacturers survive. Just like HP & Dell today. And this is why I think the Droid is a short term hit. The OS and the hardware are now separated. Anybody can build a high powered PC, so now anybody can build a high powered phone and drop the Android OS on it.

There is no ‘special sauce’ in these phones. Without proprietary IP like Apple and Palm has, the Android smartphone business will be a razer thin margin commodity business where only the most efficient manufacturers survive. Just like HP & Dell today.
