Gear Diary Weekly Roundup: November 9th – 17th

Posted on 18 November 2009 by

Wednesday is the new Monday, right? Well, to help you get through those mid-week hump day blues we’ve got this week’s roundup of Gear Diary highlights.   In the rapid-fire of updates that hit the site, there’s a pretty good chance you may have missed something.  Perhaps you didn’t get a chance to leave comments and well wishes Gear Diary’s own Wayne Schulz (that’s him, in bobble-head form in the picture above).  While Wayne takes a break (we’re still not going to say “leaving”), you can catch a daily dose of Schulz right on WayneSchulz.com and on Twitter.   Don’t forget there are 2,074 AWESOME posts from Wayne that shaped the Gear Diary site since November 2007.  Senior Editor extraordinaire indeed!

Last week also unveiled the official Gear Diary iPhone application, developed by Anthony Geranio.  The app lets you keep up with the latest Gear Diary updates, as well as view the editor’s Twitter feeds and Gear Diary YouTube videos. You can get the Gear Diary iPhone app  right here — and best of all, it’s free!

Last Week’s Contest Winners — and New Chances To Win Gear!

Last week Dan gave away a Moshi Voice Response Alarm Clock and Speck Cases.  Congratulations to the following Gear Diary Readers:  Augie, lloydrv, dsaxman, thehotrod, brislock, and ediosy.

This week even more readers get chances to win!  We’re giving away iSkin Protouch keyboard covers for MacBooks and two CallPod Fueltank Duos to help you keep all those power-hungry gadgets charged and ready (check out Judie’s recent review here).

eBook Love!

It’s always a good time to look for the best bargains in gear — and eBooks are no exception.  Carly recently showed us how to easily comparison shop for eBooks, while Amy shared 100 links for eBook lovers.   Missed the last installment of Carly’s State of the eBook series?  Not to worry, you can still catch up on the interview with K.C. Blake of the Entertainment Technology Center at University of Southern California right here.

Dan showed us how to get started with Dragon NaturallySpeaking to control our computer — and netbooks — by voice. Somehow we doubt Dan would want to try it out one day with the Archos5 internet tablet (even if it was supported in the future).  Dan also shared the apps he’d want if he were stranded on a desert island.  Which apps would you choose?

Michael reviewed the latest Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 game, which broke a few records with one-day sales of 4.7 million copies.

A few team members put the DROID smartphone through its paces.  Some noted some serious lags when compared to their iPhone 3GS, some noted some sound and camera issues, while others find themselves enjoying the device.

RIM unveiled many announcements – including a partnership with Adobe, and OpenGL support for 3D graphics & gaming – to woo developers to the BlackBerry Platform with their annual Developer Conference in San Francisco.   Will the moves come soon enough in 2010 to help RIM revitalize the BlackBerry brand and device lineup?

One thing is for sure — there’s a lot more coming this week with product review and updates on the latest tech gear and trends!
