BassJump Turns A MacBook Into A Portable Sound System

Posted on 24 November 2009 by

I am still a young MacBook owner.  My beautiful 13″ MacBook Pro has truly become a part of me.  My sweet Skooba backpack and MacBook go everywhere I go.  This is probably the first time I can say I love a computer.  What is one of my only complaints?  The audio is not very good.  I thought about getting some speakers to carry along, but I’m not sure a pair small enough to carry with me will improve the sound.

If you are an owner of a MacBook and feel the same way, today is your day!  Twelve South has just announced the BassJump which adds a USB woofer to a MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro.  Utilizing both their own software and hardware, they are able to enhance the audio quality.  If the unit sounds as beautiful as it looks, this could be a must have for all MacBook owners.  Full company release after the break…

Charleston, SC, November 23, 2009 – Twelve South introduces BassJump™, a portable, USB powered subwoofer that turns a MacBook®, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air into a portable sound system. The BassJump sound and power comes from one single USB connection. Proprietary software blends the sound output of the BassJump subwoofer with the output of built-in MacBook speakers for dramatically enhanced sound performance. BassJump is sold exclusively at the Apple Store and at twelvesouth.com for $79.99 and is available now.

BassJump makes the great sounding, built-in MacBook speakers sound even better by adding mid- and low-frequencies for a fuller, richer sound. It’s perfect for small offices, hotel rooms and other near-field listening environments. Along with making your iTunes library sound better, BassJump also adds feeling and depth to video games, streaming videos and internet radio.

Behind the sleek, minimalist design of BassJump is a custom DSP-based software that blends the BassJump subwoofer with the MacBook speakers. This combined output delivers a dramatic improvement over the standard MacBook sound. The BassJump software also presents users with visual feedback in the form of two glowing, old-school analog VU-meters. A working mini VU-meter is also placed in the Menu Bar for quick access to settings. Finally, the software allows you to customize the sound for your style of music: rock, pop, R&B, etc.

Andrew Green, Designer of the BassJump said, “Like many Twelve South products, BassJump is designed to simplify and enhance your Mac experience. MacBooks have great speaker elements built-in, they just need a little low-end assistance. So why litter your desk with piles of cables and plastic speakers when you can add a beautiful simple Aluminum subwoofer and make the speakers you already have – work better. That is the vision that BassJump delivers. And it’s powered by one USB connection, making it completely portable too.”

Made specifically for MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, BassJump is available now exclusively at the Apple Store and twelvesouth.com for $79.99.

I’m thinking this will be a must have for my backpack!  Any improvement to audio is great for me; adding beautiful style is just a bonus.
