New Worm Does Real Damage to Your Jailbroken iPhone

There are a lot of potential benefits to jailbreaking your iPhone, but there are also potential downsides.  Case in point: as if it weren’t bad enough to have your iPhone Rickrolled, there is now a worm the exploits the same weakness on jailbroken iPhones and does real damage.  This worm affects jailbroken iPhones with SSH installed, but without the root password changed. Exposure to the worm so far has been over infected WiFi networks.  Once exposed, the worm allows the hacker to remotely access the iPhone and then collect your online banking details.  The worm was identified in the Netherlands, but only time will tell if it will spread further.

So, if you do jailbreak, change your root password.  If you’re jailbroken and all of this makes you nervous, it’s probably best to use iTunes to restore to the latest official firmware.   For more information, check out the articles at the links below.

Jeff’s interest in computers and technology began by watching too many Star Trek reruns after school. His first computer was a Timex-Sinclair, for which he had the 16K – yes, 16K – add-on pack. His current interest in gadgets was spurred on by the original Palm Pilot; from there it was a slippery slope to Pocket PCs, Archos media players, Sony Cliés, and various Apple products.

Either change your password, or turn of SSH if it’s installed… although something makes me think that Apple paid someone just to make sure they could proclaim jailbreaking to be an inherently bad thing due to the lack of control… :D
