New Texting Tool for the iPhone

Posted on 14 November 2009

Bored with using the regular texting tool on the iPhone? GOGII believes they have the answer with their 2.0 version textPlus iPhone application. According to the GOGII folks, “textPlus offers free, unlimited app-to-app texting and already has millions of users – including a huge teen fan base.” (I’m not a teen, but maybe you are. Or have one at home–I sure do.)  GOGII just released their 2.0 version, after their original version was downloaded 2.5 million times. textPlus sells for a miserly $0.00 at the iTunes store, and doesn’t charge usage fees. I think I’ll download it and let my kids give it a full run-through.  I mean, after all, what do I have to lose? Full press release after the jump.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: Shinnorie GEN Label Custom Skinny Slim Bag

Posted on 13 November 2009

I recently reviewed Shinnoire‘s custome iPhone Leather Flip Case.  I had a lot of fun selecting my personal color choices for the case.  It’s not often you get to pick and choose the exact colors which will go into your case and then have it personally hand crafted. Shinnorie offers the same level of customization for their bags as well and I was also allowed to custom build a laptop bag for review. The bag I had built is their Skinny Slim Bag.  It’s a slim bag good for short trips, daily commutes to and from work or meetings.  The bag is built from a stain resistant nylon covered EVA hard shell and is generously padded with foam lining.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

FLO TV Provides Mobile TV With Personal Television Device

Posted on 13 November 2009

Almost all of our gadgets have become mobile.  One area that has not kept up with is television.  There have always been hand-held solutions that pick up local over-the-air stations, but what about the programming you really want to watch?  You know… sports, comedy etc. FLO TV is looking to fill this void with the release of a new hand held television.  It lets you watch a great lineup of stations and programming on an ultra-portable 3″ by 4.4″ pocket sized television. The device doesnt come cheap, however. The unit itself will run $249.95 and come with 6 months of programming service included.  After that, however, there will be a monthly fee. Then again, can you REALLY put a price on something that makes travel or long waits pass quickly by letting you watch stations like CNN, Comedy Central, and ESPN Mobile. Read full release after the break. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Nintendo DS & Wii Game Review: SimAnimals Africa

Posted on 13 November 2009

Early this year EA released SimAnimals, a game that allowed you to engage animals in their natural surroundings rather than in a zoo. You managed and guided their interactions and environments as you progressed further and further into a forest in a game that followed the typical ‘god game’ protocols. Unfortunately SimAnimals for the Wii was torn to shreds by reviewers for being ugly, clunky and boring. The DS version did slightly better, being seen as a fun but limited forest life simulator for kids. Now EA has taken the simulation to Africa on the DS and Wii once again, so let’s see if they managed to do any better.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Cakewalk Introduces The V-Studio 100 Portable Music Production System

Posted on 13 November 2009

While the majority of my music studio history is on the Mac, during the early ‘digital audio workstation’ days I became a big fan of Cakewalk based on their feature-packed software. The company has continued to grow and innovate, and has just announced a cool sounding new product in conjunction with another industry heavyweight, Roland. The product is the V-Studio 100 Portable Music Production System, a full featured system at an entry-level price! Read on to see what the system offers!… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Posted on 13 November 2009

If you’re into social networking chances are you visit several of the more popular sites.  Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and more.  On your computer at home it’s easy to do on your web browser.  On your iPhone it can be done as well but most of us choose to have an individual application installed on our phone for each of the social networking sites we’re subscribed to. Socialize, from Anthony Geranio, seeks to combine multiple social networking sites into one compact, easy to navigate iPhone application.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: WW2 Beachhead for iPhone OS

Posted on 13 November 2009

Sunstorm Interactive is quickly becoming one of my favorite developer of game applications for the iPhone OS.  I recently reviewed their Real Deer Hunting application and found it to be quite entertaining. Now Sunstorm is back with a new title, WW2 Beachhead.  Here’s how they describe the game play…… Buried in a beachhead bunker, players must demonstrate courage, quick reflexes and decision making ability to stand their ground against the attacking enemy. You play as the last units remaining at the critical line of defense where you fight against ever growing hordes of soldiers, shattering tank fire, and strafing gunfire from fast moving fighter planes. Bonus crates parachute in bringing extra health or more ammo. Players must use precise aim and fast reflexes to suppress the attacking waves and win the chance to fight another day. Does Sunstorm score a direct hit this time?  Read on to find out.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Please Help Me Wish Wayne Schulz Bon Voyage

Posted on 13 November 2009

On November 20, 2007, Wayne Schulz wrote his very first Gear Diary review on the Bose In-Ear Headphones. This post gave absolutely no hint that the same man who could write such a mainstream piece would also be the guy who would hit his stride posting about Crayon Sports Drinks, $110,000 New York toilets, how to research urban legends, how to get yourself fired, and so many other offbeat things. In fact, we had to create an Offbeat tag simply because there was no other way to define so many of Wayne’s postings. But more than just the offbeat, Wayne… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

App Store Tipping Point? Not Yet But Closer…

Posted on 13 November 2009

A few months back I posted that Apple’s tight control over the iPhone platform, combined with their flaky and frustrating App Store approval process would, at some point, begin to hurt the platform. At the time there was some degree of criticism in the comments. A number of observations were made that it was only those of us who are super involved in the tech world will actually care about the situation. Well, a few months later, I’m back to say that while there are now over 100,000 applications in the app store and Apple grabbed over 17% of the worldwide smartphone market last quarter, we are beginning to see the backlash. First it was the developer behind the Facebook application jumping from the OSX iPhone ship. The application is a huge hit and more and more Facebook users are accessing the site through their iPhones and iPod touches. That success, however, isn’t enough for him to want to continue to fight with Apple at the step of the way. And so he has thrown in the towel with regard to the iPhone and passed on the project to someone else. He’s still developing mobile apps… just not for the [...]
