My review of the ioSafe fireproof hard drive might just have been the most fun I’ve had with a review here at Gear Diary. This week ioSafe announced the availability of a 2 TB ioSafe Solo, the company’s external water and fire proof hard drive. Not only does the drive provide unparalleled protection of your data but it now also provided for massive amounts of storage. Priced at $399, the 2 TB drive packs all the same protection I demonstrated in my review. You can check out the new drive here Continue reading on Gear Diary …

We reviewed the Moshi Voice Response Alarm Clock. We liked it a lot. Then we had one to give away. Nice! To enter it was quite simple… you just had to ask Moshi a question. We got some good ones. Questions like “Is it really Monday again?” and “Should I even get out of bed today?” Questions like the one our reader Augie Asked… Hello Moshi, I’m wondering… will you’ll answer my question with another question? We aren’t quite sure what Augie’s next question was but we have a guess… He probably would have asked…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

For $35 shipped (note that LogicBuy shows this as available for $25 but the price appears to have risen $10) it’s hard to beat this Jensen iPod Digital Music System for casual users. The reviews are somewhat mixed on the quality but if you have kids who have iPods who have holiday wish lists that have “iPod sound system” on them – this could be worth a look. According to the specifications this is compatible with any of the iPod’s that dock including the Touch (if the iPhone fits you’ll likely have to manually put it into airplane mode to avoid interference). You’ll enjoy both FM and AM radio reception, along with digital music from Continue reading on Gear Diary …

A-DATA recently announced the release of a waterproof and shock resistant hard drive. The sh93 Incorporates rubber and plastic along with special cushion materials that allow it to withstand a 1M waterproof test for 30 minutes and military standard MIL-STD-810F drop test. I recently shared my short-lived experience with the Archos 5 Internet Tablet. My conclusion??Loved the form-factor but was disappointed in the Android implementation and totally underwhealmed by the bugginess and add-on cost of the device. Well now Jenn Lee over on Pocketables has posted on her experience with the device and how it holds up against the iPhone for web access. Short story? Let’s just say the device has made it into Jenn’s “Closet of gadget purgetory” in record time. The post is a good read that I highly recommend. You can find it here on Jenn’s site…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Today OtterBox announced the release of two new exclusive colors for the Defender Series case for the iPhone 3G & 3Gs. Smartphones can be intimidating to the non-geek. They can do so much, but it can take a bit of learning before you figure out just how to make it work for you and your needs. And then, there is the price. Smartphones are always more expensive because they can do more than just send and receive calls. But what if it wasn’t so much money? And the OS was user friendly and easy to learn? How about the new Palm Pixi smartphone? Sure, it may not be as sexy as the Palm Pre, but how about for $30 instead of $200? Walmart , via their partner Lets Talk , is offering a deal for new… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

There is the old saying that ‘any press is good press’, and so while the hype-filled year leading up to Tuesday’s launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 hardly needed help grabbing attention, the recent ‘leak’ of the controversial innocent-killing-terrorist portrayal video has brought loads of attention to the game. This includes making the rounds through the mainstream press including a featured spot on the morning conservative talk show ‘Fox & Friends’ that decried the violence and made erroneous citations of ‘proven factual links between video game violence and real-world aggression’. But whether or not the recent media controversy had a direct impact on sales but one thing is clear – the combination of a… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Will Wright’s 2008 PC game Spore was hyped to the point where anything that was actually released couldn’t help but disappoint. The publishers also made some arrogant claims regarding their DRM that led to the game being quickly cracked and becoming one of the most pirated games of the year. The game offered an amazingly deep creation system but the ‘anything is possible’ shine quickly wore off as gamers worked through the chapters. Yet after all of the hype and backlash … what we were left with was a very good game that offered loads of fun. Similarly there were complaints about the very limited scope of the offshoots on the Nintendo DS and iPhone, but they were loads of fun for what they offered. Now EA has released new games in the Spore franchise for the DS and Wii. There are enough differences that I’ll review them separately, and let you know if they are worth buying or are an attempt to cash in on a popular name at the start of the Holiday shopping season.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
