The Loop Pointer is a Gadgety Donut

Posted on 10 November 2009

This looks like some kind of house arrest monitoring bracelet, or a baby’s teething toy, but it is actually an in air mouse designed for consumers who connect their PC or Mac to the TV. The Hillcrest Labs Loop Pointer uses Freespace motion control and pointing technology … and I guess it must work similarly to a Wii control, since hand motions control it. No matter what, it’s a conversation starter. The Loop pointer’s distinctive design is round and ergonomic with just four buttons and a scroll wheel.  Using Hillcrest Labs’ patented Freespace® motion control technology, the Loop pointer lets consumers control an on-screen Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: Dexim p-Flip for iPhone & iPod Touch

Posted on 10 November 2009

If you follow me here on Gear Diary you probably know I’m quite fond of convergence devices.  I really like when manufacturers release new, innovative products that complete more than one task.  Maybe it’s the fact that these devices lighten the load in my gear bag, maybe it’s the fact that as I get older I prefer to have to remember to pack less things.  Either way I appreciate these multi-function gadgets. Dexim has a variety of convergence devices for the iPhone & iPod Touch and they were kind enough to give my one of their newest to review. The p-Flip from Dexim is not only a portable dock which allows you to sync and charge your iPhone or iPod Touch but it also doubles as an external battery allowing you to also recharge your device on the go.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Windows-only for now, with Mac OS X support promised “shortly”, Kindle for PC represents Amazon’s first attempt to strike back against Barnes and Noble’s eBook expansion. Does it succeed? I’ve been playing with it all day, read on for my review and thoughts!… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

iSkin Macbook ProTouch Keyboard Covers & Giveaway

Posted on 10 November 2009

The keyboard on an iMac or MacBook is awesome. The island keys have enough separation to make striking the right key simple. They are shallow enough to make typing fast while having enough play to prevent frequent mistyping. They also tend to get REALLY dirty. I mean, my iMac keyboard gets trashed in daily use. Add to that the danger of spilling a Diet Coke on it and rendering it entirely useless (yes, we’re talking to you Ms. Lipsett), and the keyboard is calling out for some protection. Fortunately, iSkin has you covered with a nice variety of keyboard protectors made specifically for Apple keyboards. iSkin was kind enough to send some to Judie, Dan and Larry. Let’s take a look… and give a couple away.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

An iPhone/iPod cable that withstands a beating

Posted on 10 November 2009

From what I understand it’s a fairly common problem with the iPhone & iPod charge and sync cable.  It’s also a problem that causes both costly and aggravating results. After pulling it out from the dock connector of your device countless times, the wire that connects to the dock plug becomes damaged.  It’s simply not built all that heavy duty and the stress from pulling and pushing on the cord over and over again breaks it down.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Buy A Stone, Get A Deal. But You May Have To Ask

Posted on 10 November 2009

Just back from running his 11th marathon, Larry is out and about with one of his girls. What are they doing on their fun “Father-Daughter” Day? Why they stopped into the AT&T Wireless Store, of course. It was there that Larry discovered a pretty great deal. He went to purchase a Jabra Stone headset and then, remembering something his uncle had told him, asked if there was any special promotion accompanying it. The clerk didn’t think so, but was good enough to check. Sure enough…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

30% off lots of BlackBerry and other gadget stuff at Handheld Items

Posted on 10 November 2009

Many people shy away from off-brand accessories. Not me. I’ve bought chargers and cases and all manners of doo-dads for my gadgets from street vendors in New York for dirt cheap prices. And most importantly my gadgets have lived through the use of non-OEM approved devices. Obviously that’s not true for all accessories and purchasing overpriced accessories what the manufacture recommends is certain a good idea – for the manufacturer. But there are times when off-brand accessories can save you a ton of money. Take for example a couple deals that GearSponsor Logicbuy has pointed out. Accessory site Handheld Items has this 8800 mAh lithium-ion batter for $41 (after 30% coupon) and a… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

LinkedIn for BlackBerry Coming Soon!

Posted on 10 November 2009

BlackBerry users have been wanting a LinkedIn App for quite some time.  Now, the team behind the business social networking site have developed an application that integrates unique features to BlackBerry versus their iPhone app, including: Messaging from within the App. LinkedIn Profile viewing. Calendar integration (Example: You receive a meeting invite on your BlackBerry.  You can click on the name of another person listed in the meeting invitation and it will give you the option right in the calendar to pull up their LinkedIn profile — same for the BlackBerry Address Book). During the BlackBerry Developer Conference keynote, the LinkedIn team emphasized that these  features will give you the advantage of never… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Apple Continues Cat and Mouse Game… With Hackintoshers

Posted on 10 November 2009

A number of us have had fun with hackingtosh-ing our netbooks. There is something neat about a netbook running OSX while we continue to wait for something official in the form of a netbook or tablet. Well it looks like iPhone jailbreakers aren’t the only ones Apple is trying to shut down. Word is that yesterday’s 10.6.2 update to Snow Leopard officially drops support for Atom Processors- the brain in almost all netbooks. The result is a world of hurt for anyone trying to update a netbook to 10.6.2. All is not lost, however.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Google Plays Santa- Free WiFi For Good Girls and Boys (Bad Ones Too!)

Posted on 10 November 2009

Google is giving the presents early. They just bought out web service at 47 airports through January 15th. That will save travelers the usual $10 a day fee to get on line while stranded at JFK. That’s a pretty awesome gift to the weary traveler. And it leads me to ask…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Posted on 10 November 2009

No, this is not a joke.  During the BlackBerry Developer Conference in San Francisco, the Loopt app for BlackBerry was demoed and brings some features to the table that — gasp! — best the iPhone’s version of Loopt! Stop laughing.  We are serious!  OK, so what features?  The location based friend-tracking service will enable location updates running in the background (so you don’t have to have the app open to keep track of where your friends and contacts may be) . The updated BlackBerry app will also take full advantage of the new “Pulse” suggestions feature for BlackBerry devices, where you can receive recommendation notifications of places or events based on your location — again, through background… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
