It’s one of the reasons I choose to have my iPhone forward to Google Voice when I don’t answer it.

AT&T has launched a new Voicemail to Text service.

The service, which can be added to your monthly plan for $9.99 per month, allows you to skip having to dial in to your voice mail mailbox to retrieve your messages.  Instead the service sends your messages, transcribed, in text format, to your phone in the form of a text message, e-mail or both.

You can then respond back to the message however you choose, via the phone, text or e-mail.  You can even forward the message to other that might need to read it as well.

The service also allows you to save the messages on your computer for as long as you want.  No more worrying about voice mailboxes that are full.

Your regular dial in voice mailbox doesn’t change either.  The two services work in tandem with one another so you can still dial in and listen to your voice mail whenever you choose.

Learn more about the new service on the AT&T web site here.  There are some demo videos which further explain the service as well.

I have always had a passion for gear and gadgets. It all started for me with the release of the very first Palm Pilot. I've always had an interest in handheld electronics. From handheld PDAs, to cell phones, Mp3 players, watches and other products, I'm the first person my friends, family and colleagues call when they need advice on tech. I have roots in the online tech. forum community. I served as the Administrator to Howard Forums.com and as a Moderator at both Treo Central.com and Blackberry Forums.net. Under the screen name “lgreenberg” I've amassed 50,000+ postings. I also manage my own YouTube channel under the user name larrygreenberg. I'm always eager to help.

I kind of like the fact that I have a Google Voice account and can redirect my voice mail there and get this functionality for free (at the moment at least). Be interesting to see what the transcription looks like. I guess for $10/month, they could probably afford someone to actually do the work or at least check it. Google’s transcriptions are often amusing to read. :)

AT&T thanks, but you already overcharge for your data plan – I am not really eager to shell out more money for something that Google already does (and likely much better).
