Multiplied Media’s popular local search application, Poynt, recently won first place in the “Life On BlackBerry” category  at the 2009 BlackBerry Alliance Program’s EMEA Innovation Awards in Rome, Italy.   Not resting on their laurels, Multiplied Media showed us some upcoming changes to their BlackBerry application…and a sneak peek at their upcoming iPhone app!

Want to know some of the new features you can look forward to seeing from Poynt?  Let’s jump right in…

BlackBerry users will see a new carousel user interface, that will show the weather along with restaurant, business, white pages, and more.  One thing the team from Multiplied Media showed me is that the new Poynt interface doesn’t just use GPS show the temperature of your location, it actually shows you via the application background. While it’s difficult to see in the screen shot above, trust me when I tell you it is very cool! If you are in an area that is sunny, you’ll see the sun shining in the application background.  If you are in an area that’s raining, you’ll have a rainy background on the app — all totally dependent on your exact location.   It seems like such a small detail, but it really makes the application “pop!” with the animations and transitions the developers have added.

Besides weather, users will also be able to geographically locate gas stations by price.  As we mentioned in our last update on Poynt, users can also use the app to locate a movie, share the info with contacts, map directions to the theater, and purchase tickets for movie right within a single app.    Need to find a restaurant?  Poynt will let you locate — and make the reservations — all without having to exit the application.  Add the fact that you can add search results directly into your BlackBerry contacts or map the location, and you really do have the premier location-based service app for BlackBerry.  Poynt just keeps getting better and better, and remains one of our favorite applications for BlackBerry users.  Afterall, over a million users can’t be wrong ;)

But, soon other device users will be able to look forward to Poynt.  The first non-Berry platform that will get some Poynt-love will be the iPhone.  Multiplied Media showed off their application, which will bring the same location-based search features, but also make use of the iPhone’s own elegant interface and features.  Take a look at just a few of theery iPhone’s Poynt application beta-screen captures in the gallery below (the Multiplied Media team is still polishing the Poynt UI for the iPhone OS.  The gallery images are all beta).

Expect a Gear Diary review of the iPhone version once it is officially released.
