Fun With iPhone Camera Apps- Part 2: ColorSplash

The second fun photo app I thought we might look at is a long-standing favorite of mine- ColorSplash. ColorSplash lets you take an image, convert it to black and white and then… well, and then you add back in a splash of color- hence the name.

The app is fun to use and, if you take enough time and work carefully, it can yield some pretty impressive effects. Best of all, as is the case with all the apps we are looking at, the entire process occurs right on your iPhone.

When you start the app you are presented with the splashscreen. The best thing to do is to leave the app and go to the setting page. Tapping on the icon for the app brings up the settings. It is best to reduce the size of the brush since it allows you to be more precise.

After that you jump back into the app and choose to either take a new photo or work on one you had previously taken.

The image is initially presented entirely in black and white.

If at any point you aren’t sure what to do you can simply tap the “?” at the top and bring up the help page.<

Adding in the color is as easy as tapping the “c” button and then touching the screen. Wherever you touch the color will be returned to the image.

Don’t worry of you make a mistake since you can simple touch the “G”  button and remove the color again.

What makes this app so special on the iPhone is that by using the phone’s multitouch, you can zoom in on one area and be as precise as your patience will allow.

To get it right can take a while but the results can be quite interesting.
ColorSplash is available HERE in the iTunes App Store.

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. +Dan Cohen
