Dragon For iPhone Is Out… And It Is Free!

iTunes

Since I first posted our “Sneak Peek at Dragon for iPhone” there has been one question asked over and over and over again. That question?? “When?”

And I understand the question. You see, Dragon has transformed how I use my iPhone. Seriously, I do so much less typing on my iPhone since I started Beta testing the app. It is that accurate (so long as you speak slowly and clearly.)

Well “When” is now “Now”. That’s right, Dragon Dictation for iPhone is out. And here is the biggest surprise of all… the app is free! Seriously, it is FREE!

Here’s our sneak peek.

You can get the app HERE.

Sorry touch users… this is an iPhone only app at this point.

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him.

  1. I think the only other app I've downloaded this fast was Pocket Informant for iPhone. LOL I can't WAIT to try it out!!!

You will love it!!!!! Just make sure you
speak slowly and clearly. Oh, and make sure you end the “session”
before the 30 seconds are up. I know it sounds convoluted but it
becomes natural pretty fast. Within a week you'll wonder how you ever
    used your iPhone without it.

  3. Jesus! I want that “Dragon for iPhone” so badly, but it's not available in the Japanese App store. Why? Oh, why?!

This thing is amazing… I have to be honest, I fully expected to see this app show up as one of those “pricey” programs that you have to sit and think about before actually purchasing. To see it free is pretty much a shock, since I can already tell from a brief time playing with it that it will quickly be one of my most used apps.

Not that I'm complaining, but why free? Do you think they might release a Dragon “Pro” at some point down the road that doesn't have the 30 second session restriction? Or is that a limit the iPhone just can't exceed?

  5. NOT AVAILABLE OUTSIDE THE US

Only this morning when driving to the office, I dictated into my iPhone using SpiVox – this is not free as I have to pay for the call and wait 10 minutes for it to arrive. So I was delighted to read this and watch the video and then to my utter disappointment I was informed that this app is only available to US customers. I am in the UK.

We invented the language dammit! ;-) Although when it comes to talking you guys leave everyone in the shade – but DAN if you can wield a little influence here please can you mention this to Dragon.

    Thanks

    Myles

Wow! Just downloaded. Definite must have for FREE!

  7. thehotrod11 says:

Thanks for the heads up. Downloading it now. can't wait to try it

Dan do you know what they're talking about in the iTunes store when they state “you can also update your Facebook status” and Twitter?

Do they mean that copy/paste is their method or is there a hidden automatic integration?

I was surprised they didn't offer a direct Twitter integration as I'd find that more useful than SMS.

Prediction: Dragon Dictation Pro coming soon for $x.xx

  9. dancohen says:

    Wayne-
Yes, I think the are speaking about just that- record, send to clipboard and
then paste in. The Beta version for the BlackBerry has much tighter
integration than this but the clipboard dance you need to do becomes quite
    natural after a bit.

I think it won't be Dragon Pro as much as, “if you want more than ten
    seconds snippet it will cost___.”

Smart approach since many of us who use it for free will rely upon it with a
short period and then will be MORE likely to pay rather than lose it.

  10. Wayne Schulz says:

As I think about it maybe the wise move is to add in-app (paid) features during a subsequent upgrade after seeding the playing field with a large number of users for the free version.

Seems to make more sense to manage one application that has some in-app upgrade options rather than a free and then a pro version. We'll see.

  11. dancohen says:

Agreed! Here is what I hope they DON'T do… I hope they don't do “Pay $X
for Y minutes”. Let me pay a flat fee per month and use all I want. I hate
the “buy a bucket of minutes” approach some of the BlackBerry apps take.

  12. leecook says:

    Cool App!
But a question…in the video you shrank your app pages down to show several on the screen at a time.
That was also very cool…how did you do that?
    Thanks,
    Lee

Do we know if they are going to come out with a iPod Touch version? I tried to download it, but it says that it is only for the iPhone. That is sad. Something this good (and free) should be for both devices. I hope that they change their mind (if they were not going to come out with it for the iPod Touch) or come out with an update that includes the iPod Touch.

  14. dancohen says:

I really don't know. Truth is, I was actually surprised that it is US and
iPhone only. My hope is that this is a first step and they roll out a touch
    and an international version too.

  15. Fr. Ignatius says:

This could help with writing sermons. I have always been a better talker than I am a writer. I am really interested in this application. Thank you for your review. If they need someone to test it out on an iPod Touch…I am their man.

  16. dancohen says:

Lol I have been using it to do just that… Among other things.

  17. MikeWinaustin says:

    Hi Dan,
this Dragon Dictation app is awesome! Thanks for the tip!
My question is about the video…
at about 46 seconds into the video, you “zoom out” to view all
you app pages. How did you do that!!??!?

  18. dancohen says:

It is an awesome jailbreak app called Overboard. It works beautifully and I
can't imagine having my iPhone without it.
