If the nook, Sony Readers and Kindle are too rich for your blood, and you aren’t terribly interested in being tied to a major bookstore, there’s a new eBook reader in town that might pique your interest.

It’s the Aluratek Libre, an eBook reader that sports the usual specs: DRM’d ePub (available at eBooks.com, the Sony Reader store as of Friday, December 11th, many local libraries), plus DRM-Free support for Mobi, RTF, TXT, PDF, etc., an MP3 player, and expandable SD storage. It does not use the typical e-ink screen, instead using an LCD screen that Aluratek describes as “epaper”.

Aluratek is generous enough to throw in a 2GB SD card with 100 public domain books on it, which is huge, and something that more manufacturers should consider doing! But the really exciting part is the price; at $179.99, $30 cheaper than the low-end Sony Pocket Reader, which makes it a very attractive gift idea for the eBook fan in your life!

Check out the full specs at Aluratek’s website, and let us know if you’re tempted to whip out your wallet!
