I tried Notify, a small app that sits at the top of your Mac’s screen waiting to let you know when new mail arrives, briefly when it was initially released. At the time I opted for Google’s own email notifier. Why? Because Notify was rather limited in its functionality and offer few configuration options.

Well Notify is back with the release of Notify 2 and I’m rather impressed.

The new version adds support for Google Apps, Mobile me and more. They have reworked the interface so that it now uses familiar tabs for each email account you are using. Better still, if you use a MagicMouse or Multi-Touch trackpad you can more from one tab to the next with even greater ease.

In this new release the developer Vibealicious also added a number of new notification options.  This is a welcome addition as it lets me set the email notification to something that will alert me to new mail but not be as jarring as the sounds I was previously using.

The Pro version of the utility ($10) adds some great features such as full message preview, the ability to mark messages as read or to delete them right form the application and the ability to compose and reply to email right from Notify 2.

In other words, even if you use a web-based email system such as Gmail, you don’t need to open a browser window in order to grab, manage or respond to email. At just $10 it looks like a good value for something as handy as this. Personally I’ll try the demo for the additional 13 days it offers, but can already see myself purchasing it when the trial is up.
