‘On demand’ video systems are great to allow you to watch something immediately, but if you want to go back the following day or week or month and watch it again … you have to pay again. Buying a DVD is great because it means you can watch the movie whenever you want, but it fails the ‘instant gratification’ test. Amazon yesterday introduced their solution: Disc + On Demand. Read on for more details!

The system works by pairing Amazon’s DVD & Blu-Ray disc sales to the company’s ‘Video On Demand’ system. Simply select a DVD or Blu-Ray movie from their Disc + On Demand list, which currently has just over 300 listings, and that movie is added to your Video On Demand library. It is that simple – buy now, watch now, get disc soon!

A great (but not typical) example is The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Edition. You could get the DVD for $14.99, buy the ‘watch it now’ video for $14.99 or get the Disc + On Demand deal for … $14.99! Like I said, that isn’t typical – most entries are more like Coraline: $8.99 for the Watch it Now, $18.99 for the Disc + On Demand. Still a great deal that gives you the best of both worlds for the price of the DVD!

Here is their FAQ on the system:

This pretty much says all for me.
I really hate this, but that's the way it is, here in Europe, we have better cell coverage, speeds, device (phones) selection… but you guys in the States you get much better prices on everything and you get “real” digital distribution of all kinds of media without stupid restrictions.
