27″ iMac Woes May Mean No New iMacs Shipping Until 2010??

UPDATE: Larry just let me know that someone on Twitter just got a notification that their new 27″ has shipped while the Apple store still shows shipping delayed 2 weeks. That may mean the 2 week delay is merely a supply demand issue. We’ll hopefully know more soon.

I was going to buy a new 27″ iMac when they were announced. Then I decided not to. Well a few days ago the draw of 27″ of gorgeous screen real estate, 1 TB of storage and a super powerful quad core processor became too great. I decided I had waited as long as I could. I was going to order one and put my current 24 inch iMac on eBay.

Well, it looks like it won’t be happening and for once I’m glad I waited. You see, Apple has delayed new shipments of the high-end iMac by at least two weeks due to a growing number of video complaints. Two weeks puts us at the very end of 2009. And if the issue isn’t resolved it will be 2010 before the computers begin shipping again. Timing is everything and this timing, at least from Apple’s perspective, could not be worse.

It turns out the 27″ iMacs are encountering some video playback problems. Flash video stuttering was an early issue that seems to be resolved but now there is an even peskier problem– a noticeable flicker on the screen of a growing number of 27″ iMacs that occurs even when nothing seems to be going on.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen issues arrise in new versions of Apple’s hardware. In fact, there is a collective wisdom among those who have been using Apple’s products far longer than I that one should wait until the first revision before purchasing. But with the 27″ iMacs being such a huge hit already lets hope that Apple resolves the problem quickly and early adopters of the machine to get the high-end all-in-one they thought they were purchasing.

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. +Dan Cohen
