Looks like a Happy New Year after all for everyone still running a T-mobile G1. Early adopters rejoice as AnroidSpin claims confirmation on the G1 phone getting a OTA update for Eclair 2.0 or 2.01. Earlier this year, the community stated that the first gen phone would not be getting anything past Donut 1.6 because the G1 could not handle 2.0. The problem with the phone is that the system partition is only about 70MB, which is 99% used up with 1.5 and 1.6. That can now all be put to rest as the devs at Android and T-mobile obviously figured it out.

This is also a big win for the modding community, much less work will be involved in modding the rom for speed and enhanced functionality. The modding community has some experimental releases out now for the G1 and other early devices, but will soon have native G1 Eclair source code at their fingertips. Finally the early adopters catch a break. There are lots of themes and Rom’s out for the G1 and MyTouch, check out the XDA forums for more details.
