Pocket Informant For iPhone/Touch Keeps Getting Better

Posted on 30 December 2009 by

Dan turned me on to Pocket Informant the day it was released.  Whenever asked what iPhone apps are a must have, I always mention Pocket Informant.  It is my default calendar and todo app and I use it constantly throughout the day.  Since its initial release WebIS has provided several updates. Each has offered substantial upgrades and included additional features.  Version 1.2 was released today and it is no exception. The added features? Awesome! Check it out after the break.

Here are some of the highlights of Version 1.2.

  • Direct to Outlook support.  This will require a desktop app.  According to Alex Kac, Apple approved the update quicker than expected and more information will become available around January 7 when the team gets back from vacation.
  • Tags.  Add custom tags to calendar events and tasks.  The tags can be searched from the filter screen.
  • Tasks can be converted to an event with the touch of one button.
  • Text Expander added support.  This is huge.  According to Dan, “integration with Text Expander Touch can save a good bit of typing for anyone who takes the time to set up TET with a lot of common shortcuts.”
  • A new percent complete field is added to tasks.  This is great for projects that are completed in parts.  The percentage is simple to adjust with a slide bar.

There are several other updates as well as bug fixes.  As you can see, Pocket Informant has just been greatly improved in the Task department.  The need for a separate task application is further reduced since, with this update, Calendar and tasks are all here in one place.  I do not use Outlook, but when the information on support is released, I am sure many users will be happy.

If calendars are an important part of your job or personal life Dan and I highly recommend you check out Pocket Informant.  Get it here in the app store for $12.99.

I’ve used PI on Windows Mobile for years and it was a necessity for me. I’ve bought PI for iPhone the minute it came out. And I’ve tried it off and on since then. It is a great product and has great potential, unfortunately for me, it is not on my iPhone right now.

Why? Because I use Exchange and a Mac (and Entourage user) as my primary computer. (I have a windows desktop that is used about 40% of the time.) Anyhow, it is not WebIS’s fault, they are trying. Apple does not allow them to access the calendar database directly on the iPhone and PI for iPhone doesn’t have the ability to sync to MSExchange directly. So for me to get it to work, over the air, I have to have PI sync to Google Calendar and use a 3rd party tool to sync Google Calendar on my Windows Desktop to my Outlook. That means my data has to go through too many steps to be sync’d in all locations.

Between all those steps syncing with my Exchange and with Google Calendar, I’ve lost some appointments. Like I said it is not WebIS’s fault, in my case there are just ‘too many cooks in the kitchen’ handling my calendar data.

When the direct Outlook and Entourage Sync Tools become available it will be helpful, but I will still not jump for joy. I don’t want to be forced to sit down and turn on my computer and start some syncing process, that is too complicated. I just want to sync Over the Air at any time. (OTA syncing is one reason I’ve switched from eWallet to SPB Wallet for now. But that is another story.)

Anyway, this is too long. My point is PI is great, and has great potential, but for me and most Exchange users syncing to Google Calendar and back to Outlook to Exchange is not a great solution. Until PI can sync directly with Exchange and/or OTA I probably won’t be using it. Which stinks, because it IS SO MUCH BETTER than the iCal app on the iPhone.
