Learning a Language on a Budget: Week Five – Popularity Contest

Posted on 02 December 2009

photo credit: woodleywonderworks So this week we are going to talk about what to do when you are trying to learn a language that just isn’t as popular as some of the biggies.  One of the nice things about living in the Internet Age is that we are so connected – all over the world.  So I’m fortunate because I’ve got friends all over the world, some of whom speak English, some not.  Either way,  I like to learn at least a little of their languages so I can better communicate with them.  If you haven’t guessed, it’s kind of become a hobby for me. So what do I do when I want to learn a language a little out of the mainstream (for English speakers)?  Here’s what I’ve found…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: NFL Quarterback Challenge for iPhone OS

Posted on 02 December 2009

As a youngster I can remember watching various NFL quarterbacks compete in challenge events during the off season.  Often times the events took place in Hawaii or some other tropical paradise and I had dreams of being my favorite signal caller competing in the various challenge events. The NFL and ProAppSports recently announced the immediate availability of NFL Quarterback Challenge game for the iPhone OS.  The game allows you to test your QB skills and accuracy as you navigate the QB of your favorite NFL team through a series of challenges just like those old TV specials.  NFL Quarterback Challenge will be joining a select few, officially licensed, NFL apps in the iTunes store. I was given a review copy of the game and here are my thoughts.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Fun With iPhone Camera Apps- Part 1: FX Photo Studio

Posted on 02 December 2009

One of the really neat things about the iPhone, and the reason it is such a remarkable camera is the many ways it let’s you take and then manipulate your pictures. No, it isn’t the best point and shoot camera out there, far from it in fact, but it has something unique going for it- with the iPhone taking the picture is just the beginning. From there you can crop, tweak or completely alter the image. After that you can email it, post to Facebook or Twitter or simply save right on your iPhone for later viewing. I’m having a great time playing with the device’s camera this trip and decided to highlight a few apps that are especially fun. Most have been highlighted or reviewed here on Gear Diary but they are so awesome that they deserve a second (or third) look. So here is the first in a series of “iPhone camera apps that rock”.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Holiday Goodies from Monster Cable

Posted on 02 December 2009

Monster Cable has just sent their Holiday Gift Guide, and I can see at least one item on it that I need right now – #5, the Monster Outlets to Go Power Strip w/ USB. They’re offering 30% back in “Monster Bucks” toward future purchases, so if you order multiple items for multiple people, you might want to break it up into multiple orders and save. I’ve attached the entire shopping guide, so take a moment to look though it and compare it against your naughty and nice list. … Continue reading on Gear Diary …

GearDeal: Direct2Drive’s 24 Days of Christmas – Day 2

Posted on 02 December 2009

A few months ago Direct2Drive had the awesome 5th anniversary sale. Now in time for Christmas they are back – they are featuring a game a day for now until Christmas! Day #1 was great, and it only gets better today! Game #2 is the excellent The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut. In my review for GamerDadI said “I hope that The Witcher represents the future: it has plenty of combat, a deep skill system, nicely integrated alchemy and most importantly one of the best and deepest stories and quests ever written into a video game, as well as looking gorgeous throughout. Now THAT is something to strive for.” This super-enhanced and updated version of… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

iPhone OS Wishlist: Going Beyond Version 3.1

Posted on 02 December 2009

photo credit: Josh Bancroft Among the chief complaints of the early iPhone OS releases were major missing features available in other phones, such as copy/paste, MMS, Stereo Bluetooth (and other Bluetooth profiles), to name a few. Those features have been added in subsequent iPhone OS releases, to the joy of consumers who sorely missed them, and to the disdain of iPhone haters (as it gave them less to complain about). Since Judie compiled a comprehensive post on our thoughts on upcoming iPhone hardware, we thought it would be interesting to generate a similar wishlist of iPhone OS software features. And we’re not necessarily talking about 3.x release features, but even more major 4.x type updates …… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

We are all feeling the financial pinch!    Blue Plate Special is a weekly review of bargain apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Nothing over $.99. Attention Farmville and FarmTown fans!  Many of us spend way too much time on Facebook.  If much of that time is spent on one of these farm simulation games, do I have an app for you!  This summer I did fall into the Farm Town trap and spent (wasted) a lot of time harvesting and planting crops in hopes to buy more stuff and a larger piece of land.  Yes, there is no point, but for some reason it is extremely addicting.  So, how about taking this addicting waste of time mobile!?! iFarm will give you the chance! More Nooks Beneath XMas Trees Than Expected?- Speculation

Posted on 02 December 2009

image courtesy of technabob This is pure speculation but we can’t help but wonder if there will be a whole lot more nooks under the Christmas trees and menorahs this year than expected, now that a judge has denied the injunction request by Spring Designs against Barnes and Noble. We only say this because the timing of the shortage was more than a bit suspect.  The other day, emails went out to people who has pre-ordered the devices in the morning, and by that same afternoon it was all over the web that there had been a “supply chain issue” which would prevent most devices from shipping until… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

NearbyNow Holiday Gift Guide Available for iPhone

Posted on 02 December 2009

NearbyNow has created several iPhone applications for well-known magazine titles, including Seventeen, Brides, and Runner’s World.  I can’t say that I’ve checked any of them out because, well, I’m not a teenage girl, I’m not a wedding planner, and I hate running.  However, I am required to do holiday shopping, so this caught my attention. NearbyNow has created an “aggregated” holiday gift guide application for the iPhone.  It’s called the Holiday Gift Guide.  I know, go figure.  The application is the result of collaborations with nine major publication titles and several national retailers, including InStyle, Cosmo, Seventeen, Nordstrom, and Bon-Ton Stores.  The application features the ability to find local stores that carry the product in… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
